Compact Flash-Type I vs. II vs. Microdrive
I recently converted from a Sony Clie to the AximX50v so I am a CF novice...and I'm confused.

I am reading the instruction manual that tells me that this Axim takes "Compact Flash, Type II". So off I go to all the major computer stores asking for CF, Type II. [Yes, I know I could have checked the various online places, too]. Everyone looks at me stupid, except the saleswoman at MicroCenter who tells me I can use a Microdrive [Hitachi and another brank I can't remember] with my Axim. Since the price for either the 2G or 4G was more than I had planned to spend AND b/c I didn't totally trust her level of knowledge, I didn't buy anything.

So....
1. What is the different between CF type I and type II?
2. Is it necessary to use CF II in my Axim? What would happen if I used a CF I?
3. Was the MicroCenter sales person correct? Am I just better off biting the bullet and buying a microdrive with the larger space capacity and be done with it [at least for the moment]?

Thickness. The Axim can take either.

2. Is it necessary to use CF II in my Axim? What would happen if I used a CF I?

No and nothing.

CF memory cards take less power, are not mechanical devices that are sensitive to shock/movement and are generally cheaper per megabyte. If you need 2-4 Gig, then by all means, it should work, but if you can live in 1 gig, a CF memory card may be a better choice.

And if your really not worried about power but want lots of storage space look at a 5GB PCMCIA hard drive card. Using one of these sub 200 dollar cards and a 20 dollar or cheaper CF to PCMCIA adapter is really cost effective.
