Definately use the original MAX2323 (note the exta 3 at the end)
It's pin-compatible to regular MAX232 ICs, but has great specs (especially signal quality at high speeds) - don't waste money for low-cost & low-quality MAX232 look-a-likes (I've did that - won't happen again)!

I pulled up the MAX2323 at maxim-ic and got a ' Triple/Dual-Mode CDMA LNA/Mixers' for cell phones. Are you sure that's the right part number?

Sorry, you're right - it's 3232 - "3" prefixed to the number, not postfixed

And limited in most full duplex applications to about 20kbps. True, it would probably work in the Axim at higher speeds due to it's 3v logic, but only receiving data. Transmitting data from the Axim to a PC is limited to around 20kbps...experience with the chip, not just guesses. The DS275 is a nice chip, just not for high speed stuff.

I just had a look at the MAX3232. Shouldn't the port actually have a few more drivers for the rest of the control lines? RTS/CTS, etc? if nothing else only to make it more compatible with more devices? handshaking, etc?

I whipped up a PCB pattern for the TSSOP16 package and I should have an adapter circuit board/schematic done sometime tomorrow.

Thank you very much for this site, i got a couple to have some fun. Soldering a 4x AA battery thingy to this would be much more convienient than lugging around that other connector dell gave. Also one could make a proper usb charge and sync cable with this (assuming of course thats possible :p).

This sounds hot... I feel a need to use my school's circuit board plotter to make myself a breakout box so that I can destroy my Axim more efficiently. Does anyone have a board layout or part footprints that they're willing to share?

Axim Bob

And for anybody else out there...
Does anybody else besides myself want a few of these breakout PCBs? Looking to get a rough quantity so I can order up a bunch of them. The more, the cheaper...[/QUOTE]

Skimask, I'd be interested in one of your project boards if you're still working on this project. Also, I'm wanting to use my Axim to communicate (via serial port) with an ignition control system I built from someone elses plan. It uses a MAX232 chip in the serial port connection and I believe I can use a straight serial cable. Would you be willing to review the schematic and give me your opinion on whether or not a straight serial connection is safe for the Axim? By the way, haven't been able to get to your website for the past few days.
