Had an RMA number in about 5 mins . Next is to see how long it takes them to return me a new drive.... WIll keep everybody posted...

That's a disappointment! Any chance of shock damage do you think?

Have you been writing to the card frequently? You may have stressed the chips to the point of failure.
While possible, frequent reading from the card is unlikely to be a problem.

CF cards are boxed in steel making ESD damage possible but unlikely.

Memory cards are very robust. I never had one fail as the result of a fall.
In fact, I remember reading a story where a CF card survived a bombing (I recall that it had to do with trying to film a bridge demolition).

yes, but this is not CF...this is a microdrive...big difference, solid state vs moving parts

the microdrive is literally a tiny hard drive with a spinning wheel and everything, cf cards are a solid chip with no moving parts

it could be that the drive is a 5v card and the x50s have a 3.3v slot, makes the microdrive spotty at best, hopefully it didnt stress the capacitors inside, running undervoltage is worse on caps than slightly over voltage, i've seen them pop on mobo's from having a psu that is running too low.
good luck, have you tried it in an external reader yet? hope it's not completely dead.

It doesn't actually stress the capacitors; it stresses the Vpp power supply transistors. And a standard CF slot (that complies to the specs) is always 5v.

Straight from the tech specs:

"Expansion Slots
1 CompactFlash Type II Card Slot (3.3v)
1 Secure Digital / SDIO Now / MMC Memory Card Slot (3.3v)"

so apparently it's not a standards compliant cf slot, but then again dell does say that the device works with flash and not with microdrives.

Well do these things work or not? Should I just spring for a 2gig cf card and a 1 or 2 gig sd card?

Wow.. I've never heard of these microdrives until now. I'm guessing, from these posts, that it plugs into the CF slot... correct? With a 4GB Microdrive, your PPC would be just as good, music-wise, as an iPod mini.

What's a good place to buy one of these from?
