Does anybody know whether the ASUS wifi HDD case (WL-HDD) would work on x50v ?

I am talking about this unit :

http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=WL-HDD2.5&langs=09

It is a 2.5" HDD case with WiFi and Ethernet incorporated. Looks quite promisising for resolving the capacity burden. Has anyoe tried it yet ?

Looks like it might work, the thing would be if it supports ADHOC mode to be connected directly to the Axim....although it says it has a webserver and DHCP so it might work like a wireless router

I would assume that it would work, but i am not 100% Sure

Cool find :)

Guess I 'll be the guniea pig then, for in the next couple of months I plan on getting one with a 60GB HDD. Price is quite good as well, should be around 80-120 Euro excluding the HDD.

it would be great if it did work, a great way to get alot of storage

To badly i dont know of anyway that you could see if it worked before you bought it unless you happened upon someone that has the Axim and that Unit and that Unit seems pretty new so the likelyhood of that is low...

Not sure about that one but some similar devices need there own protocols installed on the client devices... and these are (pc) Windows only

so if it does work then let us know

the only difference is this one has a webserver built into it so it may work with just having the axim as a client...it is not just a straight External drive like most are...

The device will work with as a SMB Server so you should be able to connect as if it's a windows PC.

It also acts as a wireless access point.

I just got finished configuring mine and it works great. :) I went with a 40 gig Seagate Momentus drive....nice and quiet. I actually think I wish it was louder so I could be SURE it's on.

Thus far I have only used it to stream music while I wander the house to test range. So far the range is very comperable to my existing Linksys router.

At the moment I do have it wired in, but there is an option in the config for a wireless bridge mode...I'm still tinkering with getting that to work.

Short version, it works great with the X50v. :)

Sax,
What is the voltage of this thing (the output of the poweradapter)? and does the adapter add bulk?
Also i'm curious if you cann you use it unwired, just to share the disk with the axim?

the thread is kind of old, but I just got one this week :) so....

DC input is 5V/2A and the power supply is not that big (3x2x1); however, I guess, it dose add some bulk!

yes, you can use it unwired, just as a NAS for Axim (and wired when you need Internet!)

A couple of Questions about the Unit.

1. Does the manual say anything about operating temperatures/storage temp's?
2. Does it have to be turned on or does it just come on when plugged in?
3. do you think it would work well in a car?
4. Have you Tried watching a Movie that was stored on the Asus? (Finding Nemo is about 180MB on my CF Card)

Thoughts of Potential Use:
I'd love to use my Axim in the car and this could potentially be my MP3 Jukebox Storage. The WiFi capability means no cables (which would be nice) and as of such, could be mounted somewhere in a car out of sight. The WiFi would also allow you to transfer all of you music/movies over to the Asus Unit (into your car) wirelessly.

they do refer to normal operation temperature, but no numbers

It just comes on when plugged in!

should work fine!
(however also consider RF exposure)

Yes, MPEG files using BetaPlayer.
my niece watched the Monster Inc (2 X ~570MB)
I only watch some training videos for 8 minutes! works excellent!

and/or video jukebox :approve:

More info;
the Max 40GB info seem to be wrong! Must be 40GB/partition!
I am using a 60GB Toshiba hard drive (25GB+ 32GB)!

I did try it @ work, giving the Axim wireless access to the Internet by proxy...Works fine!

Have setup 2 partition that I can read & write ....and most software on my Axim see it as storage (once it was set in GSFinder)

security! I'm using WPA & MAC Address access...
.

Cool

Only "downside" when using this in your car, would be the repeating "New Network Detected" Pop-Up's while driving through cities as it requires WLAN to be On.
Still; a very nice gadget :approve:

Cheers!
