X50v Slipcase Mod
To preface this post, I'd like to say thanks for all the info I've gotten from this site to make my new x50v a serious beast of a pda. I don't know how much time and aggravation these forums have undoubtedly saved me. That being said, I'd like to give a little back.
I was never satisfied with the selection of cases out there for my needs. I really just wanted a flipcase that protects the screen like those seen in many palm-based units. After getting the axim yesterday, I realized that the slipcase was really just a flipper with two elastic bands holding it together so I decided to do some experimentation.
First, I carefully removed the two elastic bands sewn into the sides of the case. Then, I did my best to repair the carnage with some needle and thread. Then it was off to Wally World to grab some industrial strength self-adhesive velcro. I cut out a battery cover shaped section and adhered it to the back of the axim. (I elected to go with the battery cover as the focus of attachment simply because I knew it could be easily replaced if I screwed up. Using the body of the axim would be a more secure alternative, but I wasn't quite ready to go that far.) Since the microfiber case is padded on both sides, I x-acto'ed out a section of nylon and foam to accomodate the added width of the velcro. The inner structure of the case is simply cardboard, so we'll see how well the velcro stays put over time. However, I am generally happy with the results.
The case, as you can see, does not really close flush yet, so I'm throwing around the idea of adding a magnetic closure flap. However, it's gonna be in my pocket most of the time, so part of me is happy with it as is. The up side is that almost all of the functionality has been preserved. I can still access the side buttons and the stylus slides right out from the top. The headphone jack is covered, however. Anyways, I thought I'd share my solution to my case dilemma. Let me know of you have any suggestions.
Oh yeah, before I forget...the battery door on these units are way too flimsy. It's almost like Dell decided to put a 1 cent remote control battery door on a $500 PDA.
