MP3 FM Modulator

I was in Costco earlier today (evil place!) and saw this normal looking package with a little cigarette lighter adaptor thing, and the words "MP3 FM Modulator" at the top.

Being an electronics nut, I HAD to look. So I pick it up and take a look.

Basically it's an MP3 player with no memory, that plugs into your cig plug in your car. It has a line-in jack and comes with a cord. It ALSO has a USB port on it.

On the front of this unit is the normal play/pause/forward/reverse buttons, as well as a display showing which FM channel preset you're in (1-8 I think).

If you have a USB disk key, and have MP3's on it, you plug it in and apparently it'll play the MP3s, obviously using your car stereo speakers (its intended purpose).

I got it because I wanted it for the FM modulation of voice navigation prompts from my Axim. I tried it on my X50v using IGuidance and it worked wonderfully. I had to set the volume slider down about halfway in IGuidance, but it was crystal clear with no distortion on the stereo.

This handy little thing found a permanent place in my Axim bag-o-goodies bag. And the best part? It was only like 24 bucks.

I had to mention it, because I know stuff sells quick at Costco, and you may never see it again.

But the important question is ... will it also charge the Axim if you use a sync cable or will it completely fry it?

.
I think I will stick with my Apline car stereo that I can hook my ipod up to and control through the head unit.

Quit it...now I must go to Costco and get my own. It's much cheaper than putting a CD player in our aging van.

It was really cool. On my way home from work I fired up BetaPlayer and had MP3s playing in the background while I had IGuidance running in the foreground. Both sounded great!

i have used an FM modulator in the past, but it never worked that well. i live in a city with plenty of stations, so I always had reception problems. that was long ago, though. has the technology gotten better?

i use this one from Belkin .

It has excellent reception. and the best part is that it doesn't use preset channels. I bought 2 different Modulators, but the "preset" channels were all in use by local programmming, meaning that the Modulator had to fight with it.

Using this belkin, you can choose a channel, any channel, you want to use.

I am sold on this thing!!!

The Belkin one is good, but the amazing (I think) thing about the one at Costco is that it accepts USB fobs.

I bought two of these modulators today. I have a 512k USB fob with my music on it. Plug the fob into the modulater and use the play/next/previous buttons on the modulator to select songs.

Too cool!

I live in Kansas City. Ours carried them over by the Ipod accessories.

I still wonder if I could use my USB synch/charge cable to use my Axim. That way I can get the advantage of a full fledge MP3 player without running down the battery.

Of course, I'm not willing to toast my Axims for the cause...so, I guess I'll keep on wondering.
