hi all. i'm new here and i have some questions... :)
firstoff, hello!

i just bought my x50v out of the classified section last week and i have to say that this system is absolutely awesome. i'm glad i went for this particular model...it rocks.

that being said, i have some questions that i couldn't find answers to, and if anyone could take a few mins and give some heads up, i'd really appreciate it.

1. does anyone know of a little carry case that will fit the 1100mah battery? (my cf case is too small and i have an extra battery but i don't want to carry it around in my pocket, unprotected.)

2. what's the difference between the rhinoskin al case vs. pdair al case vs. dsi al case? (the latter 2 seem identical) also, how does the magnesium case compare to these?

3. what screen protector is best? (i hate the cheap ones that have the 'matte' finish to them. i understand that this is a very subjective question, but please, give me your opinions.)

4. will a slow sd card hinder my performance on the x50v? what about cf? (i have a 1g cf card from my camera that i'm using in the axim until i decide what to get for the axim, but it's a sandisk ultra II and i'd like to find something cheaper if at all possible. i explored the 2.2g microdrive but i'm scared of what the impact from that will be on my battery life. it wouldn't do me any good to have 4 or 5 movies on a microdrive card if i couldn't watch 1 full one before running out of juice. i'm also wondering if i'll have any problems playing movies from a slow cf or sd card.)

most everything else (and much more) i've been able to find in the forums.

tia for any assistance!

Congrats on the new X50v!

1. I found a little plastic container just the right size for one extra battery at of all places a craft store...not sure what is was for originally but it works great for the battery.

2. Can't comment on the Aluminum cases...I went with the Sena leather case and love it.

3. I decided to go with Write Shields from PPC Techs...but I think the majority here favor Boxwave (do a search there appears to be some issue with the Crystal ones) or Brando. I love the Write Shields (have used Boxwave in the past) and they were very simple to put on with no bubbles etc.

4. I just went thru the same questions (my Ax is only 1.5 weeks old). In the end, I decided to go with a 4GB CF card and sever 1GB SD cards...none of them "ultra's". So far I have seen no issues with watching movies (using Betaplayer)...it is flawless off either the CF or the SD card...I imagine a high speed card will help with somethings but with movies the regular speed cards are working perfectly for me. I opted for CF since I plan on watching a LOT of movies...I too was concerned about battery isses with a microdrive.

Good question. I'm in the exact same situation. Haven't found anything yet, but I think I'll check out the craft places as mentioned above

I have a rhinocase. Used it for about 2 weeks. It really protects the Axim but its awkward to hold in your hand because it opens to the side. I nearly dropped it a few times because of the case. I finally bought a Piel Frama. I like it a lot more. Feels much better in your hand and pocket. Not as cold or as likely to slip out of the hand. If you are still interested in the rhinocase let me know. I'll sell you mine for a good price.

I bought the boxwave crystal. Had some problems with the edges not sticking, although now its better. Definitely read the tutorial on this site about applying the screen protector before you put it on. It made it a lot easier and cleaner

I recall people have said some of those mint tins like Altoid containers make good battery boxes. I dont have any altoid tins but I guess you could go to a super market and see what would fit best and you will also get some free mints with it. It wont have the problem of causing shorts because the connectors are sunken in and will be ok.

I dont know about those other aluminium cases.. I just have the Rhinoskin Al case and its quite nice.. its just a tad anti-left handed.

welcome to the forum. Enjoy your new toy.
I am told that there is minimal difference in the read/write speeds for the CF and SD cards, wether they are high speed or not. There is a thread here somewhere about that very topic, so do a search and find it. (good practice)
I have the Rhinoskin aluminum on my wife's x30 and the nnopocket magnesium case for my x50v. I love the innopocket case, as it flips back out of the way. The Rhinoskin opens like a book, and I think it is ok, but prefer the flip up. Also, the metal cases are extremely durable, and will protect the Ax from a lot of possible damage.
I use the Boxwave Crystal screen protectors on both our PDA's. Love them. Do not get a cheap one, as they will not last as well. Definitely do not use a Dell protector, ever.
As for a battery case, I have my spare for the x50v in a little cloth pouch with a drawstring. It also holds my earbuds, and my synch cable. So it is quite handy for me.
Chech out people's "view my PDA" areas to get ideas on the ways to use and imptove your Axim. Also check my signature for links to some nice help files/threads.

Cases, Screen Protector, Etc.
1. anything can be used to store the CF card. A little case from another piece of equipment. See a Camera Store, they probably have something.

2. Forget the Screen Protector. Just be careful, write only with stylus, and get a good case to protect it inbetween use. You will not get the full advantage of resolution with a piece of plastic over it. Like so many products, the manufacturer's work on the fear factor...only carlessness will scratch it....

3. The Aluminum Cases differ by size a little, but most all with do the job. You may notice that two of the manufacturers have a single or a double SD card holder in the cover. Some have neoprene lining, some felt.
Metal case is a good choice. It may not look as sexy, but leather cases don't give half the protection when there is exterior pressure on them.
