FM band technology and Dell Axim
Hi all.
well, after reading and getting excited about sending FM signals to the radio from the Axim, I saw that there is also a way to recieve FM radio TO the axim as well.
There was one CF card that works with all PPCs except the axim (mumbles under his breath) and an SD - SDIO radiocard. Granted $50 is a bit much just to enjoy the radio on the palm...but for those gadget happy people...it is just enough to get their juices flowing!!!!
Anyone with any experience with the FM receivers and the Axim?
and I'll ask the question again - any good neutral review of FM transmitters for the axim? thanks!

Those are really for gadget freeks only.
They are expensive and do not work as well as a $5 tiny FM radio.

PC-Mobile,
How did you know I was a gadget freak?!?!?!?
just because I happen to have an AXIM and spent too much money already on it?!?!?!
You are right, of course, that the geek factor versus the use factor may be low (or even very low) but still I was curious about experiences of others. What happens if I am stuck in the middle of a jungle and the only thing I have are my wits (small enough as it is), my axim and some rope. How could McGyver get out of such a situation without a FM reciver card when a monsoon was on its way (yes, monsoons in the jungle - aren't I creative!)
thanks though that you read my post!!! :approve:

Another geek way of listening to radio is Shoutcast.
Basically, it's a radio streaming service. You enter the URL in your MP3 player, and it plays the stream. Very nice, specially when you're far from home (you don't need to actually access the radio waves, everything is through the Internet).
Obviously, this works only when conencted though.
An example of MP3 player that allows Shoutcast play is GSPlayer. Basically you create a playlist in the same format as a regular m3u winamp playlist, except you put the URL of the radio isntead of the file name.
Enjoy :approve:

That could be a more constructive/useful suggestion (for some) as alternative to a radio card - for the sake of listening to radio on a PDA. But then you do not get the local radio you want to listen to in most cases.

Sure, but not me
I'm French, I live in England. It's nice to be able to listen to French radios here :approve:

Ah yes.
That is another reason for streaming radio.
You cannot win them all.

I have the AmbiCom FM-CF. I bought it at MicroCenter for $40. Yes it is just another gadget to plug into your expensive gadget. The reception is good enough. There is an audio out minijack that you must connect headphones to. I wish it played through the Axim it-self but . . . It works for me :approve: At my desk at work, I slip it into the CF slot of my x50v and it works. The plus for me is no batteries required and its small size. I don't have any other CF cards so nothing else to compete for the slot.

though I hadn't heard of the ambicom previously. Do you have a reason why you tried that one - or was it spur of the moment purcahse?

i can predict that you will spend 3h trying to tune into a station out in the jungle, and just when u get the perfect reception you either:
a) gets eaten by a hungry tiger
b) axim runs out of battery...
