Exclamation EXTERNAL CARD question... SD card/ CF Card...

Hi. My first post here. I just bought a Dell Axim X50 520 MHz, and a Dell GPS Navigation System. I have an old 128 MB SD Card that I have started using for now, but I really want to buy a 1 GB external card, and can't decide between getting a 1 GB CF Card or a 1 GB SD Card. Help! My questions...

- can I use a CF card with an SD card? Will I have a choice of where to install or store certain programs (eg. maps) and files (eg. mp3s).
- should I leave the CF slot alone for now for any other apps? (the Axim already has Bluetooth and Wireless)

Buy.com has a 1 GB CF card for $40 after rebates, and Outpost.com has a 1 GB SD Card for $55 after rebates.

Thanks for your help!

You can use a CF and an SD card at the same time, in an X50 so if you already have one or more of one kind, then it might be better to buy the other.

However....I *think* that SD cards may be slightly faster than CF though probbaly not so much that you'd notice.

At the moment, CF cards have larger capacities than SD. I *think* that the largest SD card is 2GB whereas CF cards are available in 6GB, 8GB and possibly 10GB versions now (these are mini hard drives, to are more power hungry and more fragile than the "solid state" SD and CF cards).

You may want to look at what other devices you have and what cards they use and you may also consider what add-ons you might want to get for your Axim. The SD card is generally used for memory only as the Axim has WiFi and BT built-in, however the CF card slot can be used to add in GPS receivers, radio receivers, TV tuners and all sort of other things.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks! That was very useful info indeed.

Rasu.

You always have a choice where you install your apps/data.
