external pda battery
Hi there, I'm new and I am truly grateful for all the information on this awesome site. I'm not sure if the subject below belongs in this category, but here goes.

I was thinking about connecting series of 4 D Ni-Mh batteries in parallel to create one massive power brick (12 batteries, total of 20,000 mAh). True it would be such a pain to charge all those batteries, not to mention carrying them in my backpack

While searching the web for ideas I stumbled upon a site that offered a similar solution: http://www.batteryspace.com/index.as...OD&ProdID=1312
It consists of 4 NiMh batteries connected in series (gives you 5,000 mAh). It seems very easy to charge (just plug it into the charging plug that's included).

Is there anyone that has used this?

You could definitely build something like that. As long as you can get the parts for it...it would be easy. I've got a battery extender that I'vec made, and it's not that hard to do...

Battery extenders are definitely possible in all sorts of sizes.

I'll see if I can find a link to a building guide later today. I know at least one guy built one with 4 D cells. The parts were from Radio Shack.

I built one using the coax-tip-to-Axim plug adapter that came with my x50. I use 4 AA Ni-MH batteries and it work pretty well so far. Here's the problem though. The voltage after a little while of use drops to the point that the Axim doesn't see the input voltage as high enough (~4.9-5.0) and switches to internal, then after the load is reduced, the battery voltage rises and the x50 switches to external. Then under load again it drops and the cycle starts all over again. You can't use the FULL capacity of the cells.
The 4Ds will probably only deliver the full capacity of 4subCs. I'm in the process of building an external pack that uses 12 Sub-Cs in series (14.4-15.6 volts) connected to the regulator inside one of the Belkin car chargers. This will deliver enough juice to charge and operate the x50 at the same time. Some car chargers don't. The regulator will pull the batteries down to 1.0v each at the end of use versus the 1.25v by just using 4 batteries in series. You can use any input voltage between 10 and 18. Higher is better. The WH capacity of the pack increases but the regulator only draws enough amps to supply the demand on the 5.4v side. The additional capacity required (Ds versus Sub-Cs) by using batteries alone could offset the cost of the Belkin charger. I'm not sure if I'll solder together tabbed cells and build a plug-in for an external charger or use battery holders and just remove the cells to charge in an external charger.

I use an external Lithium Ion battery I bought for my PSP. Since it's only 3.6v it won't charge the axim while it's turned on, but can charge the battery several times when turned off. The external battery can be charged with the x50 AC adapter.

these are sold at most major retailers and are only $20!

I built one of these battery extenders a few years ago for my Ipaq 2210. it would POWER the 2210 for about 4-5 hours. Now when used with the SAME 2300MAh batteries it powers my X50v for something like 1-1.5 hours . It will however recharge the battery in the X50v a few times. This very same pack will POWER my dads Ipaq 4700 for about 3-4 hours. So this seems to be a Dell thing where the battery pack will no longer power the unit.

ok i am going on a long flight i about a week so i just ordered this.

when i looked at the specs it says that the peak voltage is 5.8, .4 higher than the axim. what does "Peak" mean and will a differnce of .4 volts fry my axim x30?

Hi, instead of opening another battery thread, thought I'd just ask here if ppl already have one of those 4xAA extenders.

It seems that they will not charge the X50v while it's on? is this correct?

If not can it be modified so it will?

even If you have to add another couple of AA's to make it work & a power ic of some sorts.

I want an external Bpack that can take rechargable AA's or rechargable 9V battery's that can re-charge while the x50 is on.

ie watching a movie & battery gets too low, turning off and waitng for charge ? whats the point in that...
Instead have the pack available, plug it in, keep watching movie and maybe when movie finished unit is fully charged.

If there is a porduct on the market that does this, I want it.

If there isn't, I'll build one.
