It is my impression that the third party sync/charge usb cables you can buy don't do a good job of recharging the unit. And they don't seem to charge at all when its on.

Any one have any info on how good these are?

i've got a third party one, can't remember what brand, got it off ebay, but it works great, i can charge while my axim is on through usb from my laptop and i can in my car with the usb car adapter it came with, the travel usb cable u buy from dell i don't think can charge unless it's off

You will be able to charge it when it is on as long as the battery is not too low. If it is below 80% it may not charge as not enough power is supplied through the USB port.

I use a generic one I got off of ebay and it works just fine.

Be warned.. I've seen cables that work "fine" for a long time, turn around and kill a USB port. Personally I disconnected the +5V pwr pins in my 3rd party cable.
