Potentially daft battery charging question
Hi all. I just got Tomtom navigator 5 for my x50v. Works great, but I have a question. Battery life isn't great on the x50v with bluetooth enabled/maximum brightness and volume, but the GPS receiver is alleged to last quite a lot longer. Thus, being limited to only 1 cigarette lighter socket in the car, could I use the car charger for the GPS receiver to run my x50v (using the adaptor that came with the x50v) in the car, and use the x50v mains charger to charge the GPS receiver at home before I set off?
  • The dell mains charger states: OUTPUT: 5.4V - 2410mA 13VA (dunno what the '13VA' means)
  • The car charger for the GPS receiver states: OUTPUT: 5V 2A

So, the two are similar, although the output of the car charger seems a little low. Will it do any harm if I just give it a go?

Sorry to ask daft questions!

You could always try a spliter in the car to plug both of them in....maybe an extra battery for the x50v would help too.

Thank you sir. Didn't realize you can get a splitter. I also have the extended battery for the x50v, and I'm unlikely to be on the road for longer than 5h in a day, so I should really be covered. Furthermore, I like the idea of not having leads trailing all over the place in the car. Was just wondering if I might kill my Ax using the GPS charger on it, or kill the GPS receiver by using the Ax charger.

Cheers m8

You're more likely to fry the GPS receiver with the Axim Mains charger than damaging the Axim with the GPS car charger. What you will probably find with the Axim. using the GPS car charger, is that it will flicker annoyingly and not charge, particularly if you start with 75% charge or less.

Actually, both are effectively interchangeable. The .4v difference is withing the 10% tolerance normally expected, and the difference between 2M and 2.4A is also unlikely to impact, since the full draw from an Axim is about 1.9A. Read this thread for more information on the power requirements of the X50 series.

Volt-Ampere. It's a product of the Voltage times the maximum power, or 5.4V*2.410A = 13.014VA.

I'd love to know where u got ur car charger from that kicks out 2A.... i'm in the UK and struggling to find a car charger for my Axim x50... they all just put out about 0.6A which charges the thing just wont let me run... without the dreaded 'screen flicker'

Mine has exactly the same specifications and it is written in the instructions that it is compatible with Dell devices. It is a Socket Bluetooth GPS Receiver from Socket Communications INC. (it was the first tmie I heard of them), so I got the car charger and the GPS for the price of one...
