Newbie question
aximites...

I will be getting my x50v over the weekend and I have already started looking for some nice accessories for it...i have some $150 worth coupons with dell...

any suggestions to the list which has to go first...

i am planning on storage cards...1 gb CF & 1 gb SD.... already went through the forumn to find out that high speed ultra won't be off any help as it will be limited by pda...i hv to decide on that...

btw, i hv a dumb question.. whether both the cards CF and SD can be slotted in at the same time and both drives can be accessed simulataneously..

i already have 512 CF in my dig cam and one 32 spare CF...so I can skip CF and buy any other accessory now after listenting to experts...may be a case,CF type accessory...any blue tooth accessory.. i just became a member and i am going through all the forumns parallely...

i am not sure..help me out guys...

thanks in advance..

Welcome to the site!

Yes, it is good to get the largest card you can afford. You will find the space is nice to have down the road. You can have both card slots in use at the same time.

A case is a good idea. It will protect your new investment from accidental dings and a good one will even give some protection from a small drop.

For other accessories it will depend on what you want to do with your Axim. BT headphones are cool, but can get a little expensive.

See you in the forums!

I 2nd that. Get the largest card you can afford. I've gotten to a point where I have nothing less than 1gig now (CF or SD). I've given away all of my smaller cards.

Storage, and a case. Maybe screen protectors, if you're into that kinda thing.

Then you move on to applications, games, utilities..........

Thanks for the tips...

Reading a lot in this site...very interesting...

So what I hear is to go for storage and case....to my suprice i am just playing with my 2 coupons to optimal combination as it seems i can't combine 2 concession coupons on a single order at dell site...

Btw, curious to know what i will get in the box i receive from them..

i mean do we get first set of stylus, screen protector sheet etc...

i am not sure whether i order those things also along with casing and give up CF card...

How about sync cable and car charger.. is those things good enough to be bought at ebay ..

i do have wireless g setup at my place with my laptop in...already ordered a bluetooth adater for my laptop so that it can sleep well with my new baby...

Thanks

you should get, Axim, stylus, cradle, cables for cradle, basic CD stuff, protective sleeve (kindalike case) and not a whole lot more. I'd start with CF, SD and apps

The original package only includes the stylus that fits inside the Ax, and no screen protectors. Personally I prefer a larger pen-like stylus, so you may want to look at those.

Also, have you considered an extra battery as one of your extra purchases?

I have to admit I wouldn't be without the second sync cable - I have one at home and one at work. The other thing I've found useful is the cable converter so you can charge directly from the power cable without either the USB sync cable or the cradle - I think it'll really prove itself when I'm travelling.

The car charger (imho) would be useful if you're using it in the car, one common comment on here has been it's a definite if you're using GPS on the go.

Cheers from another Axim newbie - 3 weeks and loving it!

Although the Ultra card won't gain anything in-device, when in a fast card reader it can reach higher speeds -- a boon if you are transferring large files a lot.

Brando screen protector. Don't make the same mistake as me and go through 10 different makes before finding a good one. Screen protectors are a mine field ... some don't stick down at the edges (Boxwave), some look horrible at an angle with all the colours of the rainbow (G3), etc.

I got my Axim x50v through my IT department which was nice enough to unpack most of the goodies and begin setting things up for me - unfortunately, not a service I had hoped for. My question is simple for anyone and has partially been answered above:

What comes in the box? In other words, what did I not get?

I got the following:
axim with slip cover and extra battery as ordered (2 batteries total)
one stylus and extra screen covers as ordered
cradle with 1 power cable, 1 sync cable, and a little square thing that must be the travel charger I ordered (instead of the basic cradle option)
owners manual, leap gude, quickstart poster
windows software CD - which I believe is already installed on the device
McAfee virus scan software - as requested, finally (they kept it a while first)
compact flash card - should I have ordered the SD card?
SDIO wireless LAN card - don't even know if I need this or not
Lastly, I am currently missing the aluminum hard case I requested and I don't know if I should have received any software for ActiveSync or not. Additionally, I don't know if I should have received an additional power cable (one for the cradle, one for travel?) or not.

Thanks for helping me get started - I am adapting from Palm OS (3 PDAs, 4.5 years experience), so this is all new to me right now and any advice is welcome. Also, I vow to avoid letting anyone else open my materials for me! I spent days tracking down individual pieces I knew had to be missing and haven't found them all yet.

Thanks,
ACPharmD

Looks like you've got it all... CF or SD doesn't really matter. Unless you are planning on using a SD or CF expansion and want to keep the slot free. Most people don't use AV on the PPC as there aren't any viruses in the wild (yet..) and as long as you have it on your PC you are probably ok.

Activesync is now at 3.8 instead of the 3.7 on the cd anyway. You can download it straight from microsoft. And there WAS a CD With OUTLOOK 2002 on it btw... your IT people may still have that!

You probably don't need the SIDO wifi card as the X50V has built in wireless...

There's loads of us ex palm users... There is a bit of a learning curve but you'll soon get the hang of it. And there's loads of people to ask

Thank you for the frank commentary about my questions. Bummer the Dell site recommended the WiFi card when their product did not need it. And, I received the Windows Outlook 2002 CD, but did not see any need to open it - right or wrong?
