Ext hard drive with SD card slot?
When I travel I want to bring along my movie files with me. I don't want to bring a laptop but I'm willing to bring along an external USB 200GB hard drive.

I know the Axim doesn't have USB host, so it won't be able to use the drive directly. However if the drive has an SD reader, I could simply transfer the movie I am going to watch to my 1Gb card.

Does this critter exist?

You may be able to get a CF card with USB port and connect the drive to it. Google "USB and CF"

Such a beast does exist. For instance, there's the XS Drive 2 XL. It's a bit expensive, but it should work. I think there are other similar products out there, but their name escapes me right now.

Cool, but it's for a 2.5" drive, and only supports up to 100GB. You'd have to get another hard drive.

The XS Drive just copies digital photos off a camera's memory card to free up space. You can't copy files from it to the card. I don't believe there are any portable hard drives which let you copy files to a memory card. To do that, the hard drive would nearly need to be a computer itself. For that kind of price range, you might want to look into one of the Portable Media Centers that Microsoft has been pushing.

Get the ratoc USB host CF card, a cheap IDE/USB enclosure from ebay, and a nice big HDD.

Not only does it cost a lot, the Ratoc is a throwaway device. When I upgrade from the Axim in a few months, it becomes useless.

An external drive on the other hand remains useful for a much longer time.

I said the enclosure was cheap, not the rest of it.

And yeah, I would agree, it's not the best way to do things, but in the absence of a proper pda with USB host, that would be the simplest way to do what he wanted, if not the cheapest.
