UK Car Charger for X50v that works!
After going through 5 (yes five!) car chargers for my axim x50v that either flickered the screen or wouldn't charge when it was on, I finally have one that works!
Look
here

I received it 1 day after purchasing and gave it the hardest test possible. Whilst running WiFi and bluetooth and TomTom navigator 5 from an initial battery power of 7%, it successfully charged the x50v with screen at maximum brightness.

Don't waste time on any others - get this one!

Bravo! I was just about to post a question asking if anyone had solved this problem in the UK yet. Will give it a try too.

I bought the dell one when I ordered the 50v but that melted!!
I already had a Arkon CM506 Powered PDA mount for my old X5 which was supplied with a "barrel adaptor". This happily powers the 50v and charges up at the same time with a CF GPS attached.
There is also another socket on the base that would power an external GPS, but have not tested that.
here is the link

The Seidio GP2500 cradle charges my X50v up well. It also powers my wired gps mouse (which plugs into it), and has a "Power out" socket for charging, say, a bluetooth mouse.
It is amplified too.

It was more expensive than your power adaptor cable though.

Regards

Martin

Well, I've finally had opportunity to buy and test (albeit briefly for now) the charger recommended by Rabdo in his original post. The good news is that it seems to work perfectly ! However, I've only given it the briefest of tests so far, having received it only this morning. Tomorrow, me and the good lady are going on holiday - a 500 mile round-trip that will give this new charger a thorough workout.

Here's what I've tried so far:
My battery was down to about 10% (3 bars showing on the Pocket+ meter). I turned the screen brightness up to full; turned on bluetooth; and then started up TomTom 5.1.

I got no screen flickering whatsoever - the screen was steady at full brightness. At the end of my short trip to KFC the battery meter had increased to show 4 bars on the Pocket+ battery meter. So, the X50v had performed flawlessly and accepted some charge too - from a very low battery state.

The lead is quite nicely put together. The barrel section that goes into the cigarette lighter is svelte and not too big. Actually, it's quite narrow in section and far less obtrusive than the previous charger I had with my iPAQ2210. But, on the downside, please note that the Dell connector at the end of the charger is a permanent feature - it cannot be removed. So you are still going to need to bring a second charger along for the ride, if you wish to charge your GPS receiver on the move. The inclusion of the (non-removable) Dell connector might account for the lead being a tad higher priced than the norm.

I can't fail but mention how difficult it was to buy this item from the seller !!! I decided to call them direct rather than going through the eBay listing. The first time I called (at approx 4:00pm) they refused to take the order because they were too busy packing ! I was asked to call back tomorrow. Two days later I tried again to be informed their computer system was on the blink - no orders could be taken at that time (must have lost their pencils too). The third time I called (having left it a couple of days again), I was told their card payment machine was playing up - could I call again tomorrow - and they refused to take my order for the third time. It's a good job I'm not paranoid eh ?!

I explained that I had a long trip coming up, and politely detailed my previous futile efforts to have the shop accept my order. The chap took pity on me and said he'd despatch the charger immediately. He grabbed a pen and noted down my payment details - to be put through the card machine when he got it working again. As promised, the charger arrived the next morning.

Thankfully, all of the phone calls were handled in a cheery and likeable manner, otherwise I would have long since given them the royal salute. So much so it makes me chuckle to think back on it: rather disorganised, but nice people.

My apologies for the long post - but it has been such a trek to find a UK car charger that works. I wanted to share the experience to help others - just as Rabdo kindly did. Well done old boy !

Now just to see if it survives 5 hours continuous use this weekend...

Quick update: the charger didn`t miss a beat over a week of long distance driving. It fully charged my 2200mah battery from 10% whilst switched on and running TomTom 5.1.

Recommended, but note - as I said above - that the Dell connector can`t be removed. Therefore, you`ll need to carry a second charger in your glove-box if you want to charge your GPS receiver on the move.

Another option for UK buyers is to go to Currys and get the PSP mobile kit which includes a car charger that will plug straight into the Dell dongle (the one the mains charger plugs in to). The unit is made by MadCatz gives 5 volt at 2A and costs only £9.99, so far working great. Will report back when I have tested it further.

ps you also get a little battery holder for emergency charging, only use NiMH rechargable batteries if you want to try this box (bit pointless really as AAA batteries will give less running time than the Dell standard battery).

Sorry to sound dorkish but is the connector for the X50v the same as the X50. I need the same on and charging in the car function.

For the US folks, I purchased a Pelican "Sony PSP" Car Charger, model PS-6003 last week. After a two day trip, I can say it worked perfectly on the x50v. With BT running for GPS, the power light stayed green the whole time. It would recharge the Ax back up quickly after it had been used without power attached. Pelican's two-hour estimate for a full charge looks reasonable.

I found two PL-6003 chargers on Ebay for about $17 delivered but purchased mine at a local gaming store for $9.99, plus tax. Yep, a store had it retail priced WAY below the ebay guys.

I bought a PSP charger today for £7.99 from Maplins - ran the Axim down to 5% battery left, then i went for a drive, wireless was enabled, I was using TOMTOM 5 and it charged up perfectly, very happy

It outputs 5V at 2A, also the adaptor part is slightly shorter so now I dont knock it when i change gear in a hurry.

To fit in to the Axim the cable from the apaptor fits in to the small adaptor that comes with the axim

Rabdo and Lost Cause, I am also in the UK and want to get the charger that you mention but the link you provide has expired on ebay. Would you be good enough to either provide me with the seller and the description of the item or a fresh link? I have already wasted money on a low power flickering Sync/Charge cable and want to buy the correct one next!

Ideally I dont want to go down the PSP supply route as I want a single-piece cable so I dont loose my adapter.

Thanks, Ian

A dumb electric question ...

Is the cig lighter cable stepping down the voltage level from 12v to 5v or simply passing what it receives from the cig lighter outlet?
