FM Transmitter
Being that I just ordered my new SanDisk Secure Digital Memory Card 1GB from Buy.com (thanks to reading a great post on here about the discounted price) I am looking at using my Dell X50v as an mp3 player in my car. The Kenwood head unit I have does have a set of AUX inputs so I can directly plug my X50v into the cd player. The problem with that is battery life. This is why I am thinking about getting an FM Transmitter iRiver AFT 100 Mobile FM Transmitter. With an FM Transmitter does anyone know if it will power my X50v or will i still need a car power adapter as well? If the FM Transmitter does not power my X50v what is the best car power adapter so that I can just use the AUX inputs on my cd player? I am so glad that I found this site, the information here is priceless.
Thanks for your time and your helpful comments.
-David

Some have the ability to power your device, but you'd still need an adapter to plug it into the axim. I'd just use a separate car charger anyway, that way you can use it if the FM xmitter isn't handy. You can find plenty of the on the net, but here's one of my favorite sites:

I bought the iRiver FM transmitter and it is the best transmitter I have found. It uses the cig for power and you can pick any frequency, with presets.
The problem - I don't know how you will also power your Axim since the FM Transmitter is using the cig adapter (unless you have a car with a cig lighter and one of those power outlets, which seems to do just about the same thing!)

If your car hi-fi has an aux input, that is the best way to connect. Why use FM transmitter?
You will need power for your Axim anyway.

So i am trying to make an impossible product then? A FM Transmitter/ car charger for a X50v? The main reason i am thinking about the FM transmitter is for my wife's car (no aux input).
Is this really a practical thing to do, using your X50v as a portable mp3 player in my car?

If your car has AUX input, USE IT!
All FM transmitters sound absolutely terrible in comparison. FM transmitters can sound from "OK" to "Good", but never "Excellent". That's the nature of the product. I know from experience.
You cannot power the x50v from the headphone jack -- Nor can you get audio out from the data connector on the bottom. A single connector for both audio/power is not possible.. Sorry.
As for being practical. Yes, absolutely, I do it all the time.
I have my 4GB microdrive about 1/4 full of MP3s. I have a PSP car charger that plugs into the x50v AC adapter dongle, and I bought an aftermarket head unit (car stereo) with AUX input.
It's a great setup :)

I have an FM transmitter that powers itself and a second device from one car plug and it works great...as long as you don't try to pull too much current over it. I think it's fused for 2 amps so the axim could pop that in a heartbeat if the battery were low enough.

I have the Belkin TuneCast Mobile FM Transmitter ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16855999622 ). It runs on 2 AAA batterys. Works on my Axim and MP3 player as well as anything with a headphone (or line out) jack.

I have an I-Rock from Radio Shack. It has the ability to run on battery or cigarette adapter power. The problem is that the Axim and Irock both plug into the cigarette light and when both are plugged in, there is a lot of interference noise. When on battery it sounds fine.

Soundfeeder SF-100. You can find a ton of places online that sell them, but I got mine from Wal-Mart a while back. Looks like they're made by Arkon...didn't know that :) .

Soundfeeders suck...sorry but it's the truth. I'd get something like the Belkin FM Transmitter ($30). It uses PLL to lock in signals. Even the cheaper Belkin Transmitter is better than any soundfeeder unit.

That's very possible, but I believe almost all FM transmitters suck. I've been through several brands including Belkin and the only reason I keep going back to Soundfeeder is because there are no batteries involved with it or my cd player. I actually only use it for mono stuff like audio books anyway, so it's fine for that.
I'd like to know what manufacturer made the transmitter on my XM MyFi since it can give you great quality even over a fairly strong station.

It sure sounds like my best bet would be to use the AUX-In on my CD player my car for the best sound quality. Then get a PSP charger for my axim. Is there anything special that has to be done to the PSP charger or do i just have to plug it into my axim and enjoy the music?? Thanks for all your input!

The DC jack is the same -- just plug it in.
