MicroDrive for the X50v
Hello All,

I just purchased my X50v and already have a CF 1.0 GB and a SD 1.0 GB, but would like to know if there are any micro drives in the 2 to 4 GB size that you might recommend?

Best Regards,
Marv

I have the Hitachi 4gb microdrive. Have had no problems with it --- am loading stuff on it almost daily -- and I LOVE IT

I, also, have a 4GB Hitachi Microdrive. It's wonderful for storing all my music/video files.

I bought mine from Newegg for about $140.

Why not use a 2+ GB CF that isn't a micro drive? Just wondering. I had a 4GB SanDisk CF that was not a micro drive, and loved it.

I am using a Hitachi 4GB as well, no problems yet. Price was right compared to CF; just keep track of where the "break" point is between prices of MD and CF -- it's getting higher and higher. I think right now it's around 2GB and edging to 4GB.

I have that 6GB Hitachi, too. Using PocketMusic the energy consumption is too high compared to CF. Playing video using BetaPlayer (haven't upgraded yet) is much better thanks to its MD mode cache. Other music software might be better but MDs suck with PocketMusic - or is it the other way around? The 6GB Hitachi is great otherwise, and quite fast, too. I have no idea how the smaller and older MDs compare to the 6GB.

These microdrive devices consumes the battery faster?? How long your battery lasts using a Axim X50v and a Hitachi microdrive to watch videos?

About one 100 minute movie of 700MB file size with 128Mbs audio at reasonable screen brightness using a standard battery. Not all batteries perform alike. The original 1100mAh I got with the x50v seems to be on the weak side. The two half-price 1100mAh Dell OEM batteries I bought from LionBattery.com perform better. Haven't checked the extended 2200mAh battery yet.

Try increasing the cache in pocketmusic to the maximum. The default value is lower & thus it tries to access the hard disk continually, making it spin continually. If it has a high cache, it will load the whole song at once, then the drive will stop spinning between songs. See my post here for my comparison of different music players with the microdrive. http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=80421

Many thanks for that hint. I have no idea how I managed to ignore the cache size option. After all the default value is just 256kB... (blush). Your advice to increase the cache size to the 16MB max. will certainly lead to a much better battery life time. In that other thread you wrote you interpolated 5:25 hours until "battery runout". Does "runout" refer to the 20% battery level at which the low power warning pops up?

I have a MagicStor 2.2gig drive which works well, but I wouldn't recommend getting a Microdrive for an x50v.

As mentioned above, I consider the battery life to be one of the biggest problems that this thing has, and the Microdrive noticably decreases the amount of juice you can store.

If you're planning on watching movies on the way to work, make sure you've got an external power source or a stack of batteries.

It is just a calculation to when there will be 0% Power. As OMFG states you might want external power if u wish to use it that long. I just ordered one of those 4-AA external power packs from ebay for an 11 hr flight I am going on next month, & I also have a spare regular battery too. But for general use, I can't see myself listening to MP3's or watching movies for more than 2hrs without an opportunity to recharge, so it really is up to your own needs. Also, the Hitachi drive has less power draw than the Microstar drive, so that makes a big difference.
