Axim/MP3 Player Interface
Hello Everyone,

My new x50v arrived a few days ago and I am loving it! I have a few questions that hopefully someone can help me with:

I would like be able to have some type of MP3 and movie-playing capability. I currently do not have an iPod or any other hard drive player, but am considering purchasing one. The considerably larger storage space factor is what is causing me to lean towards a stand alone hard drive player rather than a CF or SD card for the axim...but:

If I had, say an iPod, or a creative zen..etc, would there be any possible way to:

--Use it as a "live" storage device for my axim (ie: playing movies directly off of the MP3 player's hard drive onto the axim)

OR...

--Store a movie or file on the MP3 player's hard drive and then be able to transfer it to the axim itself (or to a CF or SD card in the Axim), w/ out the aid of a computer.

Sorry for the long post! I hope that someone can help.

Thank You

Questions answered. Search for
iPod Storage on search, you'll find out why.
(May be possible with iPod mini and CF USB, have not tried. It is possible with Pocket LOOX

yes

the iaudio x5 will be able to interface with the axim x50 when WM05 comes out. it is a 20/40 gig storage drive but it itself can play music and movies (nice color screen). however youd probably rather play movies on the axim, as the X5 can only do movie at 15 FPS.

check it out, www.iaudiophile.com

/edit: for now, download TCPMP (formally BetaPlayer for movies, and PocketMusic for music. Both are free, but I recommend registering PocketMusic, you get some neat stuff.

Look on Aximsite's Deals section, there are lots of deals on 1 gig+ CF and SD cards...you can get very cheap multigig storage CF cards now. I have a 1 gig SD card, and on there I have 9 episodes of south park, 10 ripped hi-quality mp3 cds, and still have lots of room for other things.

You can get a 4 GB SD Card online for around $100 and an 8 GB Seagate Microdrive for $150. Seagate will also be releasing a 12 GB model later in 2006. Thats a decent amount of storage and you wont have to carry around 2 devices.

For a while I pondered the same idea but eventually I bought a Seagate 8GB Photodrive. The reason I gave up on the HDD approach is that in order to use the HDD device as a mass storage device you will need to get a CF-to-USB adapter card, which will cost you as much as the Seagate Photodrive; and the compatibility/reliability would still be an issue at times.

If you are really keen on getting a HDD based PSD (portable storage device) you may want to consider a OTG (USB On The Go) device such as the Fotochute from Smartdisk. With the OTG device and a card reader, you can use transfer the files (divx movies or MP3) onto the SD or CF card via the card reader. Then remove the card and use it in your Axim. Office Depot was selling the Fotochute with a 20GB HD for $50 to $70 after rebate (depends on the event) though unfortunately this item has been continued at OD since.

I'd pay $50 for a 20G Fotochute!
