I just bought, on a hunch, a Pelican Power Brick, model PL-6018, for the PSP. I am happy to report that is works great on my Axim X50v. To test it I looped playback under windows media player of a movie. It was running full screen (double size) and the processor was at 624Mhz. Audio was around 85% and the screen was on something like the third click from the left brightness. With the power brick plugged in it ran for 5 hours straight before the power brick shut off and the unit went on internal battery. At that time the internal battery was as 100% and I got 2 more hours of movie time before the unit shut itself off totally.
The really nice thing is that this thing is small and light and rechargable. It is a little less than 3 inches square and about 5/8 inch thick and weights 4 ounces. Internally (of course I took it apart) it is rather nicely made. It has a power control IC that handles charging and low voltage shutoff to protect the batteries. It has two Lithium Ion cells but I couldn't tell if they were parallel or serial connected. I looked up the cell specs and they are 3.7v and 1600mah. On the back of the unit it says 3.7v 3800mah but I don't know what that is good for. It puts out 5.45 volts unloaded as measured by my inexpensive vom. It will charge from the Dell AC adaptor or a PSP adaptor. It does not come with a charger. It has a removable cable between it and the Axim that is about three feet long (forgot to measure it).
About the only thing that seems a little cheap about it is that when charging some part in the charging circuit gets hot. The cells themselves never get hot and I didn't have it apart at the time to be sure what was getting hot. When I charge it tonight I am going to do it apart to see what is getting hot, hopefully just something that can handle it. There is a rather large toroid coil probably used in a switching power supply type circuit that may be the culprit. If that is the case I don't have a problem with that. Once the battery reaches full charge whatever it is cools off quickly. Also at no time during my usage test did anything get hot at all so it is just during charging that it is an issue.
Since I got this for abut $14 I am very happy. I think I may pick another up since they are alot cheaper than an extra battery for the Axim.
I was hoping to butcher the unit when I get it to put a USB A female socket on it. Then I can use a sync/charge cable with it (oh and my USB phone charger etc)
nogardsram: Actually I think I paid $10 plus $4 shipping on ebay. There are some other packs I may get just to try too.
Snerkel: There is really no space inside you even a mini usb connector. Maybe if you hacked off the present connector but even then I am not so sure. Once I get home tonight I will take some internal pictures and post them.
Ba-gug: This battery does not mount on the Axim. It is an external battery that you can leave in your fanny pack or whatever while plugged into the Axim via a cord.
badbob001: I agree. I would even have been happier with a slightly larger Axim with a REAL power jack. That adaptor is a PITA. On a related note does anyone know where to buy an extra or two?
As a follow up on my post I charged with the case open to determine the hot part and it turns out to be the IC. It is a surface mount unit of about 14 pins so it is really tiny. It is disipaiting alot of heat during charging, I hope it lasts. I may find a tiny little heatsink to add to it just to spread the load a little.
I'd get one of these, but the drawback I see is that I'd have to carry an extra power brick with me while traveling. I don't carry a brick for the x50, I have the Belkin trio which is a usb cable for the x50, with both a brick and cig lighter plug to plug it into. I liked the idea of putting a usb port in it, but if that's not possible, I guess I am out of luck.

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but how do you hook up the "powerbrick" to the Axim? Do you just use that little adapter that came with the axim and put that into the powerbrick? Thanks.
