Is it possible to hook up a WI-FI CAMERA to x50v?

Although numerous sellers claim that "the camera can be viewed and controlled from a standard Web browser, video display, or even a compatible cell phone or PDA" and, moreover, that "camera can communicate wirelessly with standard 802.11b/g wireless devices", I kinda doubt it, 'cos I didn't find a word about hooking up the beforementioned "cell phone or PDA" in THE MANUAL

Unfortunately, I'm not a network whiz, so if someone could explain to me in plain English whether or not it's possible, I'd really appreciate it.

TIA

Based on what they show in the user manual I would say it is not possible to view the camera with the included software. However, there is still a way to do it. You just need to get yourself some a website with enough bandwidth and set it up as a webcam that feeds to a page. Bring up that page on your Axim and presto, you can see what the camera sees. Just make sure that the output image on your page is not too big for the Axim screen.

Thanks for the quick response!

One more Q though. The troubleshooting guide (p.65 of the manual) shows the solution to "The camera does not transfer the image to a cell phone" problem. Is it just a poor wording or some sort of a phone that can communicate directly with the camera via Wi-Fi? I mean, if I got it correctly from your explanation, its suppose to be something like "my cell phone doesn't show any images on the web page I created. What should I do?", isn't it?

Hi, I was looking at the manual abit, as I was looking for a similar camera, and from what I read the camera has a built in web server. You would just use the PDAs web browser to attach to the camera, and see the output. You probably wont be able to see the JPG stream, but a pic that updates at a set interval. Check out p.36

Hey, Luge!
Yeah, you right - they can be connected, if the browser supports Java or ActiveX. I just got a conformation on that.

The only Q left is that how to connect the camera to the PDA via Wi-Fi ( in order to open the IE and type the IP address in)

Hi, I have Sony SNC-RZ25N and 30N cameras up and running. I'm using View Commander Mobile on my X50V to administrate them. You can get a trial of the program at www.ivimg.com. I found that using IE Explorer on PDA that I could get to the entry page for my cams, but the PDA did not have the correct verisons of Java or X to go further. This program solved my problems. I don't have any intrest in the company. But I am a happy user. Good luck

Thanks for the input, Surfdawg!
Can you connect a camera to x50v directly via Wi-Fi? If yes, then how?

Hi Wolfrx, Yes you can, but let me calrify. My cameras are about 25 miles from where I am now. I have Road runner hooked to them providing sevice. I have static a IP addresses on each. With my axim, I establish wifi and then simply click on my view commander program. I have previously entered the IP address and passwords for each camera into the program, so once I tap it connects and displays the video.
I believe your asking if you can go from camera to pda via 802.11 with out going over the internet. You can, but the camera must have a static IP address. When I first admin. my cameras I use a crossover cable. on my laptop, I set up a network connection with the default address provided by the camera. Later I enter the static IP address provided by RR. you would enter that info into the view commander program. for example, the program wants: camera model; host name or IP address; port #, username and password. This really the only set up for the camera . hope this helps.

Thanks again, Surfdawg! I'm not sure that I've got your point. If you could possibly make a detailed step-by-step instructions on hooking up a Wi-Fi CAMERA to the PDA without going online, including screenshots , that would be swell, 'cos I found that many ppl are interested in the matter, but it seems that nobody found a definite answer yet:
Panasonic Network cameras and Axim
Wireless video camera for x50v
Viewing Internet Cameras with the Pocket PC?
X50v as a surveillance monitor

Hi Wolfrx, I went back and re-read your first post to make sure I wasn't confusing thing more. Briefly, I am using my Axim to view my IP cameras over the internet. It works great using View commander softwear. However that's not what your wanting. My bad.

I will be attempting to go Axim to Camera wirelessly (without internt) in the near future. I won't have physical access to my cameras for about 30 days. I believe it will work in ad-hoc networking mode.

However, I think you may have read too much into the marketing copy of the camera. These are network appliences in that they are designed to be part of a network. For your camera, it attaches to the network via 802.xx. Even if the Axim could be made to attach wirelessly (equivelent to using a crossover cable between cam and a computer) the Axim will not have the ability to work with the camera using the Axim's native software. That is the problem I am working with and trying to solve using various 3rd party softwear.

I can say now, that a cell phone will not connect to your camera without the internet being the common means of communications between phone and cam. The phone and camera trasmit and receive data in different ways. Nothing can be done about that one.

If you wish, I'll be happy to keep you in the loop as to how things work out and how to dupicate any success I may have.

In conclusion, your camera is designed to capture and transmit video over a network to the internet where it can be remotely viewed. If used in this fashion, you'll have little problem. Like you though, I'm not satisfied with that.

I believe NetFront comes with a Java implementation. You may want to try that and see if it works.
