Cool WHEEEE! - I took the plunge to the dark side...

Well, I did it. I just ordered my x51v today. I got it from Dell SB for $507 with the 2 year complete care warranty.

I have been a Palm man since I got my first PDA in '99 - a Handspring Visor Deluxe. I've gone through several great Palm models (all of them dying around a year and a half for various reasons - which is why I purchased complete care!).

My latest has been the Tungsten T3. It's been a great handheld, other than the digitizer problem that was fixed once under warranty, but now is out again! So, goodbye to my trusty T3.

Palm has disillusioned me. The T5 was a great disappointment - as I'm sure many of you will agree. The Lifedrive was exciting at the announcement, but the more I heard about it, and played with it in the stores, well...that wasn't all it was cracked up to be either - anyway, who needs a built in harddrive when you can add the same size with removable CF cards?

Anyway, when I began looking for a new unit, the Dell caught my eye. It appears as though it may be a little "slower" than my T3 (anyone have experience with this?), but overall seems to be a great choice. Plus, I love to be on the cutting edge, knowing that I'll probably keep this one for a couple years before I get back to the edge again!

I'm excited about the ride; from this side of the decision, it no longer seems so dark. I'll keep you posted on how the transition goes!

to the owners club.
I had a T2 before and think the axim is great. It did take me a couple of weeks to get back up to speed. My T2 was tweaked to exactly the way i liked it with my choice of software, so I felt a little lost at first. But there's just so much more the axim can do.

And there's loads of great stuff, and helpful people here to help out

Welcome to the site!

You are going to enjoy the PPC world greatly. I made the switch from Palm a few years ago and have been very happy with the choice.

Me too! Die hard Palm user until about 6 months ago. I did love my T5 but the Axim was on sale and I had to see what all the fuss was over the VGA screen (Wow was all I could say). Still miss Ultrasoft Money but other than that I am very happy with my Axim.

Hmm... I never realized that we were considered to be the dark side... Anyway, you sound really happy about your purchase. Congratulations and welcome to Aximsite!

I was a Palm die hard too. Started since the Palm III days. The last Palm I used was a T3. Now using a x50v; but still hanging on to my T3. Both Palm and PPC have pros and cons. It is mixed feelings over changing platforms.

T3 - It is like my ex-girlfriend. Still like to see her occasionally.
x50v - My exciting new girlfriend.

Its true M$ is the dark side! But the dark side is so seductive. I've been a palm user since 1999 and always upgrade on a 2 year cycle - the problem is palm has nothing that can replace my beloved T3. The LifeDrive doesn't work and the TX doesn't inspire. So I'm ordering an X51v at the end of the week and selling my soul to the sith.

Welcome to the site!

If any of you guys have an old used palm or ppc PDA that has an SD card slot, please PM me as I wish to buy. I need a pda for a friend so that he can just carry around a small handheld with wiki in it. Sure my X50v works just fine for wikipedia, but my friend's current wikipedia source, his IBM thinkpad, doesn't fit in his pockets well. :D
So if anyone of you switching palm users have a PDA that you dont want/need and is willing to sell, please PM me. THx

Now that Palm itself has 'gone over to the dark side' - with a Windows Treo - is there anyone left in the sunshine?!

welcome to aximsite. you can look in MyPDA for some software suggestions. I would also recommend reading the stickies in the x50 sections of the forum.

I guess you would say I have one foot in the water...

I still primarily use my Palm device (Sony CLIE UX50) but I am gradually moving to the X50V. Losing the UX50 thumb board is going to be painful, initially. I have been testing software and trying to find PPC alternatives to my exisiting Palm software. I would say I'm about 30% complete. I am waiting for the WM5 upgrade before I take the plunge fully. I just wish I could find a PPC app similar to ShadowPlan. I will probably make the full migration sometime over the holidays.
