cellular wireless internet

Anyone connecting their cellphones to their pda to connect to the internet?

I have nextel right now and their service is going downhill in my area. My contract is up at the end of this month and I am thinking about switching providers.

Cingular, TMobile, and Verizon are who I may switch to. What data packages are you guys using? What speeds are you getting? I am looking for a package that has decent speeds (at least 56K speeds) and is pretty cheap. Can you use your phone as a modem to connect to a dial up provider and get 56K speeds or do you need to have a data plan? I am confused on what to do and I can't count on my local cellular shops for good information since most people don't do this.

Thanks for the input.

I use my Razr to connect my axim to the net. When I get my WM5 and my boss gets Exchange 2k3 SP2 I am going to have free driect push e-mail with my axim connected to my phone all the time.

I have cingular service with the $20 media works plan. Cingular wants $80 for 10mb data connection last time I checked and I am pretty sure that has changed. That price is outrageous. I hear T-mobile has a good data plan. I don't know anything about verizon. Whenever I connect the best I have seen is about 200k.

You might check out Sprint EV-DO network or Cingular's EDGE. One blogger I know gets aroud 800k down with his Sprint EV-DO. I know you said that won't work, but just letting you know.

One thing I learned at howard forums was that with my $20/month media works plan, that if I use it sparingly, I won't get cut off. But to use the cingular data connection you have to have either their data plan or the media works.

Thats what I've read on HoFo too. I also read that tethering your phone with media net plan (the new one they offer) isn't supposed to be allowed, but people do it anyways.

Will all phones that accept media net do this?

I've noticed that some of the people that post there don't know what the hell they are talking about. I like the community here better, I trust posts here more then HoFo. :approve:

Ok... I'm using a Motorola V551 through Cingular. Connection is through the GPRS part of the phone. So far it works great.

I think you can always use the gprs connection regardless of what plan you have. The thing is, if you don't pay for a plan, like the $10 (or whatever) for the 5mb or $20 for unlimited then they are going to charge you per use, like .3 cents per 100k or something like that.

TRY VERIZON WITH VCAST. Get a Bluetooth Phone though. Moto E815 is great with the Axim. No separate data plan required. Near DSL speed. Mine is great!

According to Verizon TOS, using a VCAST phone with EV-DO service as a modem is a violation and may result in termination of your account (and you may get socked with early termination fees). While you maybe able to easily set it up, Verizon is aggressively searching for those that do.

You may be able to tether to a 1xRTT connection without much of a problem and not have to pay a data fee if you use it sparingly...

there's nobody talks about T-Mobile
I use V330 as modem
EDGE is good (around 100k), 3 times as dial-up
$19.99 with tethering support, or $5.99 with limited html

T-Mobile T-Mobile-Web V330 (== V551) over Bluetooth to AXIM X50 with
EDGE GPRS connection working.

www.dslreports.com/mspeed
600k test presumably downloading files from the network to the phone.

V330, fairly low signal level (2-3 bars),
Beaverton OREGON,
92 kbit / sec to 96 kbit / sec. rate through the V330 and then over bluetooth.

The V330 with the default firmware does NOT show an "E" egde icon
or any other indication EDGE is available / active. One seemingly needs to SEEM
edit the phone settings to enable that.

That's on the tmobile-web / tzones plan just a quick test to see if it worked.
