Worked with Dell on X51v and Active Sync 4.0

I am new to Pocket PCs but have a lot of experience with computers. I had ordered a X50v but received an X50 by mistake. I had installed Active Sync 3.7 to use with the X50v.

I then got a X51v from Dell and installed Active Sync 4.0 from the CD. The sync would run for a long time and then fail with out syncing with Outlook 03. I knew the connection was working because I could browse the Axim from my laptop and I could make a Terminal server connection from the Axim.

I called Dell support and got a great tech who walked me through a number of different steps. During the process we did a hard reset of the Axim, uninstalled Active Sync, searched for some dll files, and reinstalled Active Sync from the CD.

Syncing works great as long as I don't select anything related to Outlook. I can sync files, etc without error. I was off the network away from the Exchange server when I was working on this. What the tech decided was that Outlook was using "Cached Exchange Mode" which saves the information in a .ost file instead of a .pst file Active Sync was unable to make a connection.

I looked into using a Data file but it appears that if I have mail delivered to a Data File (Personal Folder) it wont be available from anywhere except the Outlook installed on my laptop. I need to be able to access my Outlook data from multiple different computers as well as from OWA. The tech thought that this issue might be resolved in Active Sync 4.1. He also thought that MS would skip Active Sync 4.0 and release 4.1 instead.

Does anyone have any ideas of the best way to deal with this?

I thought with the X51v and Win 5.0 you had to use 4.0 or newer?

I had read that thread before as well. It was good to read it again to refresh it in my mind. I am not running any VPN software on the laptop. The setup was able to create a Partnership between the devices. If fact we deleted the Partnership a couple of times and let it recreate through the wizard.

Precisely the same issue here with Office XP (Outlook 2002). I can explore, but it hangs when syncing.

I don't use an exchange server -- I merely run Outlook as a stand alone on two separate machines (both are acting the same way). This would seem to rule out the .ost issue at least in my case.

I've tried both AS 4.0 amd 4.1. A network connection is established in either case, and my install of ZoneAlarm is not an issue. I was going to try reinstalling Office XP tomorrow.

Let me know if you come up with anything. I need to have a working PDA by the end of the weekend. I've actually obtained a return authorization from Dell due to this issue, and would rather keep the device if I can get it to function!
