Worked with Dell on X51v and Active Sync 4.0
I am new to Pocket PCs but have a lot of experience with computers. I had ordered a X50v but received an X50 by mistake. I had installed Active Sync 3.7 to use with the X50v.
I then got a X51v from Dell and installed Active Sync 4.0 from the CD. The sync would run for a long time and then fail with out syncing with Outlook 03. I knew the connection was working because I could browse the Axim from my laptop and I could make a Terminal server connection from the Axim.
I called Dell support and got a great tech who walked me through a number of different steps. During the process we did a hard reset of the Axim, uninstalled Active Sync, searched for some dll files, and reinstalled Active Sync from the CD.
Syncing works great as long as I don't select anything related to Outlook. I can sync files, etc without error. I was off the network away from the Exchange server when I was working on this. What the tech decided was that Outlook was using "Cached Exchange Mode" which saves the information in a .ost file instead of a .pst file Active Sync was unable to make a connection.
I looked into using a Data file but it appears that if I have mail delivered to a Data File (Personal Folder) it wont be available from anywhere except the Outlook installed on my laptop. I need to be able to access my Outlook data from multiple different computers as well as from OWA. The tech thought that this issue might be resolved in Active Sync 4.1. He also thought that MS would skip Active Sync 4.0 and release 4.1 instead.
Does anyone have any ideas of the best way to deal with this?
