gwes.exe issues. WTF?

Yet another annoying issue with my X51V. On a regular basis I'm getting the "We're sorry, a problem has occurred with gwes.exe" error reporting popup.

I've found gwes.exe.0409.mui in the windows directory on the Axim, but I honestly cannot figure out what it is, nor what it's used for. Each time I get the failure, I end up with at LEAST 8 instances of the same program failing.

Programs I've installed:
Socketcom wifi companion (2.5.2)
PPC Sokoban
Bejeweled 2 (trial)
MS Money (2006)
MS Pocket Streets (2006)
Omega One battery pack lite
TCPMP media player

Any ideas?

Latest: I've just hit "send" 37 times in a period of 2 minutes... all gwes.exe... effectively this is now rendering my axim unusable.

Feh.

One of your programs is not compatable with WM5. Make sure you have the latest, greatest versions of everything, expecially Omega One.

You will either need to soft reset the device or turn off error reporting in order to get rid of the message.
I got it when I opened Yanceyware reader. The program runs fine after turning off error reporting.

I just got the same error for the first time on my x51v I've had for about 2 weeks.

I tried to turn it on this afternoon, but it wouldn't respond. So I put it in the charger, turn it on, and it boots up, and then shows that error. And now it's running, but my battery shows up as 0 charge.

Now I charged it last night, and didn't turn it on today, and had the lock button on. So how did the battery get drained?

Did you have any battery issues? Or is that some separate problem I have?

I had that problem too. I had quite a few programs installed. So I hard reset and am reinstalling one a day until I can figure out which programs work. So far the winners are:

The Dog Ate It
Pocket Informant
WebIS Mail
Resco Explorer

Those are the ones that have worked with no error messages that I used to be getting.

Sad thing is, I haven't managed to install many programs yet. I had to hard reset a couple of days ago because I had screwed up my network settings somehow.

Now, I only have Battery Pack Lite, Bejeweled 2 Demo, and Enigmo Demo. Think one of those could be the problem? They all worked for a week or so before my hard reset without any problems...

I've gotten that message several times too, and I never got a chance to install ANY extra software on it.

GWES is the Graphics, Windowing, and Events Subsystem. It is at the very CORE of the Windows environment. Any Windows developer is all too intimately familiar with it. It's what does all the drawing of windows, buttons, checkboxes, drop-downs, etc. It basically IS Windows.

I got this error when I tried to use Sprite to backup. It also stopped at the email backup point a couple of times and stopped the program. Any Ideas?

Upgrade your version of Pocketmusic to the latest version -- that's what fixed it for me (as well as a screen corruption bug when I went to load new songs).

Sprite isn't WM5 compatible yet. That probably explains the issue.

Thanks Tanker Bob for this bit of information. That answers a lot of questions. Maybe you know the answer to this question as well:

Does the WM5 backup program back up all the same things as Sprite?

Sorry, no, I don't know. I haven't tried WM5. My rule is to never install version x.0 of any operating system on any device that I need operational full time.

Get the same error too. This time just scrolling through my Calendar file. ANOTHER soft reset solved the problem.

I've had the Axim X51v now for over two weeks, I a disappointed with the number of times this unit requires a soft reset.

I am left with the impression that this unit is unstable under WM5 and desparately needs a ROM update.
