Magnolia: You obviously haven't tried a zen because the sound quality is noticably better right away. And the last time I checked, I was able to download songs from Itunes to my Zen so, I don't know what the problem is. You see friend, I need a music player that I'm not afraid to get dinged up every now and then; For the amount of money that I'm putting into a player that can't get radio, has to be sent to the manufacturer to replace the battery, and has a limited battery life, I think I would want to get to more of my money's worth without sacrificing features. But then, it's probably difficult for you to realize that through your Ipod colored glasses. I had the 4th gen and the Nano, and there's nothing great about them, and I think that theres very little value in putting so much emphasis in verifying peoples approval of your opinions through self absorbed trivia.
the ipod and the axim both have attributes. i have both an x50v and a zen micro, and i use them both. my x50v i bring everywhere with me, it is my mobile entertainment center and my personal computer when i'm away frm home. however, it *is* a pain to use to listen to music sometime. you have ot navigate a bunch of menu's to get to play music, where as with an ipod (or any mp3 player, most have a similar ui) it's much simpler to simply play music. when i pull out my axim in class i get a bunch of attention i don't want or need. when i pull out my micro no one gives it a second glance. however, a pda *is* more practical if i could only have 1 device. i cna play just about any format of audio or video, plus use it for countless other tasks, which an ipod just cannot do. i sued to use my axim for music (i found that using x50mix i get better sq than my zm) but i eventually decided against it because it's such a pain everytime to navigate through the program menus.
my bottom line is that both serve different purposes. an axim will never be able to carry around 20gb+ of music, just like an ipod will never be the multipurpose device the axim is. if i could, i'd get a iaudio x5 or iriver h320 for all my music needs and carry an axim for my video/app needs. when i can only bring one device however, it's always the axim that i bring with me.

Ok. Why don't you have a look over at head-fi.org. There are a ton of people who think that the zen doesn't sound markedly better than the iPod.
What headphones are you using to base your comparisons on? I'd be curious to see if you actually use a set that are good enough to make such strong distinctions.

What the hell does that mean? "Verifying peoples approval of your opinions through self absorbed trivia" Huh?

I am one of those who said that video iPod was a stupid idea. I still think it is. Keep in mind, this is not a video iPod - it's an iPod that can play videos. Big difference. The core functionality is still about ease of use and music. It happens to also have a hardware mpeg-4 decoder so it can play video. That's it.
I think video on a pocket device is just D.U.M.B. regardless of 2.5" screen or 3.7".
The iPod was a better audio device than the Axim yesterday. And it's a better audio device today. This iPod will succeed because it still does what the iPod does best very well, not because people are sheep or because it does videos. I don't want to continue to rehash this, but the iPod is the best audio player out there, bar none. And that's because of the whole package - iPod + iTunes.
The Axim for music is for geeks. (Remember, I've got an Axim and an iPod). Different tasks, different tools.
Yeah what he said.
I have both and use them for both....this ipod is still an ipod not a video ipod....I'll continue to watch divx on my x50v thank you.

Does anyone know how long the video ipod last playing video ? I saw that the battery is supposed to last 20 hrs but that must be for audio only. It would be nice if the pdas had 30 gigs and a flash card to use as ram to minimize the hd spinning. If you could play video for at least 5 hrs on a single charge and had massive storage like the ipod or dell dj in a pda that would be the shizzle.
You know, the new ipod with video can't even fast forward or rewind.
I find that hard to believe. I haven't used one, but I'd imagine you fast forward or rewind the same way you do with audio - press the middle button once and use the scrollwheel. I'd put money on it.

If you want to primarily watch videos on a portable device I would neither have gotten an Axim or an Ipod but rather a portable video player with a fairly big harddrive.
edit: and what about one-handed, while in your pocket operation of the device? Is this possible with the Axim? That's a big deal for me.
I don't know about you, but there's something about a WIDE OPEN TOUCH SCREEN being in my pocket that makes me nervous. And my nano? I could fit 5 of them in my pocket before feeling like my Axim does. Besides, I won't take a PDA to the gym.
I use my x50v at the gym every day. I use the Dell leather case clipped onto my shorts while doing weights. D pad is configured to change volume, skip songs, rewind etc. I just place it in the cup holder when I'm on the treadmill.
I have to admit I don't use it when I run outside, but then again I wouldn't use any device while running outside.
I had a dedicated MP3 device but gave it to my wife when I bought my Axim(seemed like a good deal to me :approve: )
Wow, would you look at that: a link describing how the new Ipod doesn't even have a forward or rewind for playing videos. Isn't that interesting and totally truthfull.
