POP email by Wifi?

Hi everyone,

I'm a new Dell Axim 51 owner (previously a long time palm user) trying to find my way around this new PDA.

On my old Palm T3 I was able to use a WIFI card and the bundled Versamail program to check my email from a WIFI hotspot.
I noticed that the outlook email program on the Axim just downloads recent messages during Activesync but doesn't seem to have the option of checking my email via WIFI on the road. Am I missing something or do I need a third party program to do this?

A third party program, such as nPOP, is needed.

Is this new to WM5? Pocket Outlook on my X50v w/WM2003SE does this without issue.

Henros is mistaken and you are missing the fact that you can create either POP3 or IMAP4 mail accounts within Pocket Inbox to send and receive email via WIFI or any other available connection method on your Axim.

See the Accounts menu new accounts

Yeah, you don't need any third party software... Follow the steps below and tweak them for your ISPs remote mail settings. Same as you would for setting up outlook or outlook express. Let us know if you get stuck. Good Luck~

Start>Messaging>Accounts>New Account

Page 1/4 ~ E-mail Address
This is easy, enter your email address
Next....

Page 2/4 ~ User information
The "your name" part is what ever you want. It has no bearing on the settings.

User name is the part of your email before the @ sign (ie USERNAME@.com)

Password is your email password

Check the box for Save Password
Next....

Page 3/4 ~ Account information
Account type is POP3

Account Name is what ever you want it to be. If you set up more then one this can be very helpfull. I just used my username, same as the last page.

next....

Page 4/4 ~ Server information

This is where it can be a little different for some people. 99% of the time it is MAIL..COM, From looking at the Comcast site it appears they use MAIL.COMCAST.NET for the incomming and SMTP.COMCAST.NET for the out going. You can try these. But this is one of the areas you might have to tinker with. For example changing both to MAIL.COMCAST.NET

The domain you can just leave blank.

Options.....

Options page 1/3

I would not check this box for checking for messages every X# of minutes. If you are not online you will get an error message every X# of minutes.

Next....

Options Page 2/3

Here I checked the box for "Outgoing mail requiers authentication" as well as "Use separate settings"

Outgoing Settings....

Outgoing server settings

For username here I had to use my entire email address. This was very different then the rest of the set up.

Enter your password

Leave the domain blank

Check the box for save password

Check the box for "Require SSL for outgoing mail"

Click OK in the upper right corner

Next....

Options page 3/3

In order to save space I would select "Get message headers only"

Check the box marked include and select 2K

Finish....

Glad some chimed in, I was like wtf?
I get POP via WiFi and Sync.

I know some ISPs don't allow you to retrieve e-mail unless you are connected in through their service. That is why a lot of people resort to using Web Based E-Mail services, such as Google Mail.

I, however, have not been able to get GMail to synch on my Axim. Followed the guildines, entered everything in, no connection.

Wellcome to the AximSite, Docgreen ... You will enjoy :-)

I was a little relunctant to have my Axim to connect to my POP3 mail server because I wanted to preserve my emails on the server.

The trick is to select 'Get message headers only' and mark 'include' 8k.
(or whatever).

Now I receive a copy of my POP3-mails all ending with a comment:

[Message truncated. Tap Edit->Mark for Download to get the remaing portion.]

I get this comment despite the size of the mails (even less than 8K)
so I can read all my POP3 mail on my Axim and still retain them on the mailserver.

I use the method noted above by FlyACL (setting up a new account) to access my ISP's POP account when cradled at home - thereby bypassing the awful Outlook as my desktop email service - but Xelkos is right, many ISPs do not offer access to their email servers unless you are specifically connected up to their service, or they have webmail of their own.

In my circumstance, Yahoo! Mail has a reciprocal agreement with my ISP, so I can use their service to access my POP mail wirelessly, but otherwise, you may want to look at something like the free Mail2Web's PDA service -

I stand corrected. However, nPOP is a pretty good alternative, and it's free too.

Hello NYC_nigel ..

"I get this comment despite the size of the mails (even less than 8K)"

It's valid for ANY size (at least in my case)

In this way my server acts 'almost' like a IMAP setup when READING emails.

When SENDING emails the copy stays in the 'Sent' folder of my Axim.

BTW most of us are palm dropouts :-)

Sorry but I was a little bit too quick there.

I use my axim to observe my private POP3 mail account 'on the road'
where I don't want to receive BIG (large?) emails.

The main point is that I can check my 'inbox' via my Axim without erasing the mails.

I deal with my emails on the job or at my home PC.

Better this time ... ?

Hmmmmmmm, I'm syncing with my Gmail account through Wi-Fi with no problem at all. Settings as follows"
User name is your COMPLETE gmail address XXXXXXX@gmail.com

Password is your gmail password

incoming mail

pop.gmail.com

outgoing mail

smtp.gmail.com

Please not that for some reason Pocket Outlook did not auto config these setting when setting up the new account. Info had to be entered manually

Hi Z

Thanks.

I was just concerned that if i set to 8K then a 2K email would float away from my yahoo server to my pda....which we dont want....i wonder why they dont have the option "leave on server" in the setup. its even on outlook express and outlook....not that we'd ever want to use those programs.
