i had the opportunity to install wm5 on 3 different x50vs. installed 4x in total. i noticed that wm5 would be relatively slower if the following happens: at the screen alignment screen, when u tap & hold on that cross thing, if the cross moves slowly to the next position, my x50v will be a slow pda after wards.
not sure if all the slowness is got to do with the flashing/updating process. can anyone confirm this trend?
It does that when you first upgrade, if you do it again it should be faster.
I rolled back anyway.

Well success at last. I had to move my cradle to another computer to do it. Weird - my USB port on my main machines MB wouldn't allow the second part of the update to occur. Thank god it failed before it started writing the WM5 impage!

Ok, well I upgraded to WM5 tonight on my Axim X50V and after a couple hours of banging my head against the wall with Zone Alarm :azz. I figured that I would post what I finally had to do to get ActiveSync to work. Ok, here goes:
1 - Install ActiveSync 4.0
2 - Ensure that the network connection created for your Axim is set up as per M$ instructions.
3 - Completely unistall Zone Alarm, delete directories and reboot. (Make sure you at least turn on M$ firewall for some protection)
4 - Reinstall Zone Alarm and make sure you put it in learning mode.
5 - Connect your Axim in the cradle, USB cable, etc.
6 - Fireup ActiveSync and click the prompts to allow ActiveSync access to trusted zone, etc .
7 - Establish connection with Axim and Sync away.

P.S. This may not work for all, but it worked for me!

Second attempt after rollback to 2003SE has gone very well so far;
1. Did hard reset before WM5 upgrade.
2. Used Cradle, not cable.
3. Removed all SD/CF cards.
4. Performed 1st phase of upgrade, left in cradle during hard reset.
5. Cancelled request for partnership.
6. Hit continue on the Dell software upgrade [following instructions]
7. 2nd phase, install upgrade took a little time but completed fine [held breath]
8. installed "magic button" so that I could shut down "sync" and keep it from coming on all the time. Created "ghost server" in active sync settings, and that allowed me to change sync settings to manual [stopped coming on all the time]
9. I own Resco File Explorer 2005, and after installing that, formatted both my SD and CF cards - [after backing up what was on them]. Copied the files back [does not matter how] Power drain when off does not seem to happen any longer.
10. After reading other posts about the white screen, I am very diligent about NOT turning the PPC off and plugging it in with the wireless on. So far, no white screens.
All is fine after about 4 days now - waiting patiently for the patch from Dell, but some of the tips by other users are working.

So, why am I doing this self torture? What does WM5 get me?
If I am lucky, I get decent battery life and a PDA that works and syncs about as well as it did in WM2003SE. It may or may not run all of the software I am accustomed to using and it will not allow me to fully access my Hotmail account via Messaging. There is a risk of having the unit crash when I need it most. What do I get in return? To the best of my knowlege, there is no software out there requiring WM5 to operate. There is the placement of data into flash memory so that it won't be lost if the battery dies. But SO WHAT??? Number one, I've used PDA's daily for about 5 years now, and never had a battery die in use. I charge it each night, and with current PDA's I have spare, swappable batteries. If that actually happened, however, I have Sprite Backup and can restore my system, data and all applications in a few minutes on the fly, wherever I happen to be.
As near as I can tell, all WM5 gives you is a slightly different interface, some of which is more inconvenient than before, and a great deal of heartburn.
I'm back to WM2003SE, I feel no loss, and I think I'll wait until WM5 specific applications or the next OS appears.
At this point, I agree about the no loss, I rolled back day one (about a week ago) and my system is fine. I never ran a battery down and while on 2003 I never had to do a hard reset. I am going to leave well enough alone and continue with what works.
I use my Axim for meetings / appointments / schedules / contacts, so why do I need to mess with WM5 until they fix it once and for all.

Most of the applications work correctly and to be honest I like it.
It looks nicer and it seems to be fast.
It liked a lot internet explorer, it seems very fast.
Unfortunately I rolled back as my cf gps is not recognized by tomtom 5
I'm sure I'll upgrade again once I know there is a solution for gps to work.
well I'm back again...
installed wm5.0 upgrade, crashed and burned and went back to 2003se...
then I thought ah stuff it, gotta do it :) so upgraded again, just more cautious on installing applications to make sure they do work with wm5.0
so far it runs about same perfomance compared to 2003se, but wifi works better - switches on & off without reboots yah! thats atleast 4 reboots less I have to do a day.
memory doesn't leak as much as 2003se, persisant storage is a plus.
not much different, but I suppose it should be easier for programers? anyway if your happy with 2003se stick to it, as it's not much of an upgrade.
but if you like new stuff like me, then do it :approve:
