According to PocketPCThoughts.com, Dell has just yanked shipping the WM5 upgrade CDs for the x50v. Maybe our voices were finally heard and Dell will actually bring it back to the lab and bring us a less buggy WM5 (can't say bug free because come on...it's microsoft here.)

Any one notice that as part of the WM5 install the ROM version was reverted back to A01 from A05? The installer actually did the roll back to A01 before install WM5 so I'm wonder if half the problems are due to the old A01 ROM. Wonder what would happen if you installed the A05 back on? So far this has been a disaster for me - the WM5 upgrade. Activestink 4.x does not work for me now :(

On second thoughts...maybe it's just A01 WM5 ROM but it did make me concerned.

Your second thought was correct, this WM2005 ROM1 as opposed to WM2003 ROM1.

Well, I guess things went better for me. It took some time and attention to detail. The critical things I use seem to work fine including activesync. I also use an X5 and it syncs fine with the new activesync. It has freed up a bit of RAM so I can run applications with their files. Soft resets are slower. In anticipation of likely SNAFUs, I am running my critical apps in both the X5 and X50.

I hope Dell will be kind enough to send us updates. Clearly, they will not be able to post them online and maintain peace with Microsoft. I fear it will be like the WM2003 update for the X5. There, they decided not to update known issues like the alarm and left the system in its flawed state.

I was a Palm guy for years, and when they failed to meet my expectations, I made the move to Windows Mobile. I'd like to say that I could always go back if Microsoft/Dell fails me, but Palm is now in bed with Microsoft.

That is a heart attack waiting to happen!

A quick reset and it continued perfectly through the rest of the process and has been fine since.

That is exactly what needs to be done.

If you are seeing the error 85010014 then try uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook. The error in ActiveSync is actually from the Outlook APIs. You will need to reconfigure Outlook unless you backup your settings. To uninstall Outlook click on the Control Panel -> Add or remove Programs -> Office 2003 and chose to modify the installation by adding or removing components. Uncheck Outlook and updated it to remove Outlook from Office 2003. Then click on Office 2003 again and re-check the option to install Outlook to add it back to Office 2003. You may need your Office 2003 CD. Then reboot (From PocketPC FAQ)

Well I got my upgrade cd for WM5 yesterday... and last night i backed everythign up and took the plunge. Guess what?

No problems whatsoever! That's right.. I followed the directions and had no issues.. Try following these steps..

1) Uninstall the Activesync from yrou laptop/desktop
2) Reboot
3) Install Activesync 4 from the CD. reboot if asked. (mine didn't ask)
4) Connect the Axim x50 to your USB port
5) Insert the WM5 cd and run the setup program and away you go.

A couple of resets (only the required ones) and I was in business..reinstalled my apps, restored my data and i am not seeing any issues so far except one...

Is it just me or is this thing DOG SLOW when processor speed is in AUTO mode? I switched it to NORMAL (416) and that is MUCH BETTER. i did not switch it to HIGH (520) to conserve a little battery life.

And btw, i didnt have to uninstall outlook at all.. i use outlook 2003 and XP both to an exchange server and POP3.

It seems that WM5 doesn't know when to step up the cpu speed. I'm sure this will be worked out in the new ROM. It seems that alot of people have successfully upgraded and there are less problems than implied from reading all the thread titles in this section.

Did anyone notice a battery life difference yet?

Cannot upgrade to WM5

Hi,

I got my CD package one hour ago, but failed to upgrade to WM5.

Everything seemed fine: image was uploaded, but after hard reset, the system starts as WM2003SE. Upgrade cannot move forward.

Any suggestion?

If you are seeing the error 85010014 and are using Exchange 2003 and folder redirection with Outlook, you may have to turn folder redirection off to sync

I fixed it on my end... not sure which part did it.

1. I completely uninstalled ALL traces of activesync
2. hunted through the registry to remove all activesync references
3. ran the detect and repair on outlook 2003
4. rebooted
5. hard reset the axim X50v (yeah I know but something was screwy on the
unit I'm sure)
6. installed Activesync 4.1 (yes the leaked version - but hey it worked!)
7. hooked up the Axim
8. voila now the sucker works.. and it seems ALOT faster that before, no
idea why.

my hint that something was wrong on the axim itself was that eventhough I
tried to sync "directly" to the exchange server via wifi the error still
happened. That told me it wasn't only a problem on the laptop it was the
axim as well.
