I had the same problem. But all i did to resolve it was uninstalled AS 4.0 and installed the AS 4.1 and everything is working now.

My upgrade went flawlessly. It was pretty painless and AS4.0 is synching just fine. I've got TCMP, PBreeze, iLauncher, and MS Reader installed so far. More tweaking tomorrow.

You do realize that it upgrades twice? The first time it upgraded 2003SE to the latest rom. Then it upgrades to WM5.

It tells you to remove the device and do a hard reset. Do just that. Then put it back in the cradle and hit continue in the still running upgrade program window on your desktop screen. This upgrade takes about 10-15 mins. The first one only took 20-30 seconds for me.A couple more hard resets and you should be at WM5.

I am removing Active Sync and re-installing it to see if that helps.
Also, you have to have a usb connection directly to the motherboard, no peripheral,i.e keyboard, monitor, USB hub, etc. And the fron of the computer case will not work sometimes, you have to use the ones in the back integrated to the mainboard.
I had a jolly time with this issue also. What I had to end up doing was to open activesync without the device attached, then delete all the existing partnerships. Then on the X50V go start->settings->system.>about->device ID-> then give it the device name I wanted it to be. Somehow that silly technique they used, caused the wierd naming convention to be inserted into the PDA. Don't forget that if you sync with another desktop, like I do at work, that you want to delete those existing partnerships before attaching the PDA, or you'll go thru the same problems.
I didn't think Dell's instructions were very clear at all.

Also, at work this afternoon, I tried to turn it on, and it wouldn't start. I took out the battery, and restarted it. The device indicated a memory error. I had to press the contact button, then it came back to life. Hope thats not an indication of future problems!!

Before you go too far, try to "detect and repair" in outlook. It helped for me. (its under the help menu, and you'll need the original outlook CD rom)

I should have tried that first, however I wanted to get some 3rd party @#!#@ out of outlook anyway, so the clean installe with a newly backed up PST worked fine for me. But I agree, you need to do detect & repair first if using office 2003.

I was going to wait to do the upgrade until I heard from more people about how it went. Well, that lasted all of 30 minutes. I did the upgrade and it went flawlessly. I played with it for a while before syncing. No probs.

I synced this morning and the sync went well, but now I have problems. I tried a few apps and it all worked, but a couple hours later I was showing someone the new OS and it wouldn't turn on. I let it charge and soft reset it. then I drove home and a couple hours later it wouldn't turn on. I put it in my cradle and reset again. the battery was dead. with it in the cradle and off, it keeps turning on every 5 minutes or so.

Bobby, I viewed your PDA. If you have not upgraded to Pocket Breeze 5 (it just came out), I recommend that you do so. It runs much better on WM5 and there are many other improvements.

If you are seeing the error 85010014 then try uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook. The error in ActiveSync is actually from the Outlook APIs. You will need to reconfigure Outlook unless you backup your settings. To uninstall Outlook click on the Control Panel -> Add or remove Programs -> Office 2003 and chose to modify the installation by adding or removing components. Uncheck Outlook and updated it to remove Outlook from Office 2003. Then click on Office 2003 again and re-check the option to install Outlook to add it back to Office 2003. You may need your Office 2003 CD. Then reboot (From PocketPC FAQ)

upgraded yesterday without a hitch . . . it's the after-effects that are killing me! my battery now drains rapidly - even with my X50v off. running pocket breeze, iLauncher, pocket weather on the today screen. pocket e-sword is working great as are several other programs. just need to figure out the battery issue . . . :rolling:
