Display Japanese (no IME!) for WM5
Ok, I know there's a lot of us out here who are looking for the quick fix; no immediate or *necessary* need to have an IME (be it any language), but would like to have the ability to display Japanese in text docs, internet pages, etc. After sifting through literally just about every fourm on the net regarding the topic, I found a file that cures all in one swoop. No editing registries, no sweating over wince.nls files, etc.
This file is from Asukal, who I found via the forum.xda-developers.com fourm. He deserves complete credit for this. So, thank you, Asukal. You've done all of us a huge favor. :approve:
Just download the attached .cab file, sync it to your PDA (which, by the way, I am on an X51v running WM5, and can only speak to it's effectiveness on this machine/OS), run the .cab file, save it to your PDA when promted, do a soft reset, and your done. That's it. You can now select Japanese for encoding in PIE, as well as select Japan as a region setting if you so desire.
I've never uploaded to a fourm before, so I'm not sure if Aximsite is going to allow this 4.14 MB upload, but I'll give it a shot.
>>Ok, yes, there seems to be a 2 MB limit here. If anyone would care to host this file, or knows where I can, please e-mail me at my screen name @ hotmail.com, and I will e-mail it to you, as well as update the post with the proper link.
ENJOY! :)

I forgot where I got this...either from brighthand's thread or somewhere else, but this is a Japanese locale registry and the ms gothic font registry file.

No. As far as I know, most of the Jappack links on that thread are dead, and as I believe someone else may have pointed out here, all the wince.nls and reg files scattared about on that firstloox thread are not for WM5, which is what my post is in regards to.
Cheers!
>>Addition -- if you're not talking about files in regards to Bagoj's IME, rather Asukal's "Lets Japan No,5" file link, that didn't work on my X51v.
Here we go all, a link to the .cab file which worked for me, as I said above.

Wow, guys, I look away for a minute and what do you know, the thread finally picks up! :)
Thanks a lot guys, and especially to you, gwinter, for all the info. I'll be looking into this as soon as tomorrow (as I still have to gather the courage to do the big WM5 jump...)

update : i installed asukal's let's japan and manage to set the region to japan. I have no problems with display and input now. Everything seems to work like charm. A few words still cannot be installed and showing boxes. I'm quite happy now and will experiment more.

Ok. Here's my summary :
1) Instal Asukal's e-china(11MB) to get WM5 wince.nls and mUniFont.
2) Edited Bagoy's registry just like jxt's post to use munifont instead of ms gothic. REMEMBER Do not copy the wince.nls file. That is for WM2003SE.
Done this two but cant get display and got crippled input. In the regional setting there is no japan. then,
3) Installed Asukal's let's japan downloaded from magix's link(5MB).
Afther installing Asukal's let's japan, soft reset and you can choose japan from regional settings.
After that everything works like charm. No problem with display and input. except some words still can't be displayed.
I prefer the Multibox input system. Any comments ?

Wow, I was away yesterday and there is quite a bit of interest here. Hopefully many of you have sorted out everything. If not, let me see if I can help further.
Try to get just the display of Japanese to work before the IME. The easiest way is using Asukal's packages. I've already pointed this to these packages in one of my early posts. Also note that the registry structure is sometimes displayed with an extra space on this board, for example Sys temLink. There shouldn't be any space there.
For those that wants to do things manually, this is the current setting I'm using on my system:
|
Code:
|
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\FontLink\SystemLink]
"Arial"="\\Windows\\arialuni.ttf,Arial Unicode MS"
"Courier New"="\\Windows\\arialuni.ttf,Arial Unicode MS"
"Tahoma"="\\Windows\\arialuni.ttf,Arial Unicode MS"
"Times New Roman"="\\Windows\\arialuni.ttf,Arial Unicode MS"
"Symbol"="\\Windows\\arialuni.ttf,Arial Unicode MS"
"Frutiger Linotype"="\\Windows\\arialuni.ttf,Arial Unicode MS" |
Note that I do not have SkipTable defined, nor did I add font aliases or change the system font in anyway. If you want to understand what these registry value actually does, refer to Font Registry Settings for Japan on MSDN. There are much more information there if you're willing to spend time to look further into it.
Some of you (shady) still can't display some of the "words" after everything is working correctly. This is because the font that you have does not contain that "word". You will have to find another font that can cover the "words" that you want. On my system, you can see that I'm using Arial Unicode MS. This file support everything within Unicode 2.1, so everything should display correctly; but it also means the file size will be huge. And indeed it is, around 22Mb. You can get this file from some version of Office suite. It used to be downloadable as an update to Office, but no longer. Please be aware of licensing issue regarding this font (meaning, don't offer a public download or else Ascender Corp is going to come after you!)
Also a new feature in WinCE 5 is the ability to multilink the fonts. Yes! Finally, you can chain together several font files to extend the coverage of scripts that can be displayed. For example, you can do:
|
Code:
|
"Tahoma"="\\Windows\\msgothic.ttc,MS UI Gothic;\\Windows\mingliu.ttc,PMingLiU" |
This will link both msgothic and mingliu fonts to the Tahoma font face.
Finally, before you move on to working on setting up the IME, make sure that the wince.nls file is correctly working. You have to soft reset at least once after copying the file. Then check that you can select Japan in Regional Settings, or that you can select Japanese codepages(eg. SJIS, EUC) in PocketIE.. You have to soft reset once after copying the file. Then check that you can select Japan in Regional Settings, or that you can select Japanese codepages(eg. SJIS, EUC) in PocketIE.
Edit: Oh yes, 3rd party file explorer. I use GSFinder+. Quite nice, you get zip/lha compression support. Best of all, it's freeware!
