Exclamation comparing X51v with X50v on WM 5!!!!!!

well, my fd got the X51v, and we were comparing X50v with the X51v. We had some finding

the WM 5 on X50v upgrade seems to be newer, it has a progess bar for soft reset. But this it is not on the X51v

and if my fd swap the battery on the X51v, it will do a soft reset. But it won't do that ont the X50v. I wonder if there is something do with the backup battery on the X50v

Soft reset takes about 3 second more on the X50v

After a soft reset (no program installed), the X51v got a total RAM of 49.47MB and about 32MB available for user and on the other hand, the X50v got a total of the 49.29MB and only about 28MB of RAM available for user.

I still don't get it, is there a bug on the firmware so it only see 49MB of ram instead of 64MB we should have??

And the X51v got a setting to program the function of the POWER button to do a "FULL SLEEP", but not the X50v...

Anyways, just want to pass on some info

P.S. they both show ROM A01, OS on X51v is 5.1.1 702, OS on X50v is 5.1.70

Interesting news

On the note of memory, it is probably a restore area or something, plus you do not get EXACTLY 64mb (just like with any flash card or storage device) the formated capacity is less...

I think the full sleep is the totally turning the unit off function and maybe the x50v hardware does not support that

but the X50v shows 64MB on WM 2003SE...

I hope it's a firmware bug or something, otherwise, i will go back to 2003SE since after relocating DLLs and stuff, one can hit 32MB+ free RAM on the X50v on 2003SE, it might not be possible anymore with WM5

On WM2003SE it shows 61.xx
I was able to have 37 MB of free Program Mem on my old x50v. With WM5 I only have 27MB.

Wonder if this has something to do with batteries being drained overnight?

if you check out this review, you will see X50v has 61MB RAM and 48MB available on 2003SE (under the topic "External and internal memory")

http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/rev...aring-en.shtml

I am getting worry about the RAM issus, coz i used textmaker and 20MB of free RAM is not enough opening some complicated documents on the old OS... that's why i started thinking about the LOOX 720 :)

If you think about it, the X51v has NO back up battery. Take out the main battery and you lose all that was in RAM i.e. a soft reset. This is also the reason why the X51v cannot run WM2003 because without persistent memory, it would do a hard reset (lose all contents in RAM) when you remove the main battery.

i think it will still short 15MB (128MB - 16MB)
it might be a bug or something, at least i hoped so or i will not upgrade at all.

If you have the chance can you post the list of running processes and the memory they use on the x50v and x51v respectively after a soft reset? You can use something like memmaid I think. 4 Mb of difference is not huge but it is a significant amount… Thanks !

It is NOT a BUG. That's the way the memory is allocated. Do a search, a lot of ppl have discussed this already.

tallshorty, are you referring to this?

I think this suck so much, I am so short on RAM that I don't want to make it even worst on WM 5.

geng, i will see if I can make a list of process, but as I recall, those 4MB went into the OS's process, so I believe it's used by the OS.

Don't worry about the RAM. I've ran textmaker, internet explorer, email, and TCPMP listening ot music all at the same time without much of a slow down

the problem was that I have a lot of lab report, they have tables and graph, the file itself is less than 200KB but textmaker will not open it with 23MB RAM, it will pop up the "Low memory white screen" and force me to close textmaker.
