I just wanted to make sure what the end goal of this (not having your device turn on when in the cradle) is:
Is it so that your battery isn't used because it isn't charging?
Is it so that the screen isn't lit up and shining at you?
Another reason?
.
I'm not sure why tallshorty wanted to cradle without a sync. I've never had a problem with my Axim being connected to AS the whole time its in the cradle.
However, the easiest way to charge the Axim without connecting to AS or having the unit turned on is simply to plug it into the wall and skip the cradle altogether.
I actually have had the problem of being able to cradle my x50v and have it sync just fine, but not charge (as I do not have the AC adapter connected). I am wondering if that is a problem others are facing as well (it is a hardware problem solved by changing a few wires in the cardle - at least for the x30 cradle, I am going to make sure I can do it this weekend for my x50v cradle).

I may be sorry I asked, but why would you want to sync but not charge at the same time?
You wouldn't, that is the key. I don't have my AC adapter connected so my cradle doesn't sync AND recharge my axim at the same time. (I have my AC adapter set up at home for charging, whereas my cradle is at work for syncing).
I really think the ideal is to be able to sync and charge my axim by just using the USB cradle. I know this is possible because I have also done it with the travel-sync cable which charges and syncs at the same time over USB.
My x51v will charge and sync in the cradle without the power cord attached at all. The whole point was to stop the device from auto syncing every 5 mins. Because once the device turns on and syncs it does not turn off again. Therefore it is running on batteries and not charging.

I think the deal with *original* DELL equipment is that their sync cradle and USB cable do NOT charge on their own.. .that's why they have extra connectors for you to plug in the charging cable. If they can charge from USB power, why bother with the extra DC connectors?
3rd party USB cables do charge and sync.
I use the USB Travel sync cable without AC at work. I've inadvertently done the quick shutoff thing due to wanting to stop the battery from draining while at work and mostly it has worked. Timing seems to be the important thing. USB is low power and takes more time to charge or barely keeps up when unit is on and actually loses ground if it stays on enough.
At home I have the cradle with AC and, sure, it charges and keeps the battery full of electrons during all kinds of usage. But, I still find it annoying to hear the thing sync every 5 min's. So I tried the power off thing again with the cradle and after a couple of attempts it worked.
I use killsync to stop the syncing until I WANT IT TO SYNC!(For some strange reason, MS, with all their infinite wisdom and consumer usability testing, forgets that WE ARE NOT THEM - some of us only need to sync occaisionally like once a day.) But killsync doesn't stop the unit from coming on and looking for a sync - it's like an addict - needs a sync fix bad! From what I read, it is WM5 that keeps turning the unit on every 5 min's according to a MS moderator in a MS Newsgroup. So somehow, timing the off sequence just right tricks it into manual mode - I'll have to try to find the thread I was on and pass this by the guy.
Anyway, this dummy server thing works and is far easier than being sure to be right there to turn the unit off at just the right time. The bigger issues are why does MS seem to think we are too dumb to sync manually, and why does it take MS so long to respond to users - seems like a reg fix would a pretty simple option to offer.
There is also a string about adding another dummy connection . . . then use the scheudle connection option . . . . then change the setting to manual . . . then delete the dummy connection.
Setting remain.
If I see the string, I'll try to remember to post it here.

SolSie listed the fix in his WM5 Fixes string
"ActiveSync 4.0 turns on automatically/Processor stuck at 624MHz ******
There were several posts indicating ActiveSync turns on by itself when the Axim is not cradled and eventually drains the battery. It never happens to me. Circumpvention provided by Invid:
Disabling automatic syncing (and activesync startup) did. The new activesync is a dog, even worse than it was on WM2003SE and makes my x50v almost useless while running. I will list the steps to disable it. Note that you will still be able to sync, but AS will no longer start up on it's own.
1) Start up AS on your x50.
2) Tap the menu tab/soft key and tap "Add Server Source"
3) Configure a server source with a dummy IP address, user id, password and domain name; these do not have to be real
4) Once configured you should have another sync source show up on your main AS screen...continue on.
5) Tap the menu soft key again and you should see that the sync schedule option is no longer greyed out.
6) Change your schedule from a timed automatic start of AS to manual under both fields
7) If you try to sync now, AS will try to contact your imaginary exchange server and that will take forever until it times out, so you can now delete the exchange server from your list of sync sources. Your changes to the sync schedule will remain and will survive soft resets too.
If you have a switcher app running (like vbar) you will find that when you close AS it will now stay closed and you should see a corresponding increase in speed.
Post some feedback and let others know if this worked for you. I am not really sure if this is what sped up my x50v but I know that it no longer slows down to a craw on a regular 5 minute schedule and AS only starts when in the cradle or when I start it for BT syncing."

I just switch off the option in Activesync on the Axim that says "sychronise all PCs using this method: USB"
It doesn't actually appear to prevent the Axim from being synchronised, but it stops it from turning on by itself.
Also, by configuring a fake Exchange server, the `schedule' options become available. Changing these to manual stops Activesync from starting on the Axim every five minutes in the background, too.
I suspect that this constant opening of AS has something to do with wanting to be like push e-mail. If you have a continuous sync source, and you want to constantly update your e-mail, and if the system does not provide for true push e-mail, then having AS go on and off, on and off will keep your e-mail kind of up to date.
