Making use of Softkeys -- modify Today page?

Is there a legit way to change the 'softkey' functions on the Today screen? I've googled this and found ways through registry editing, but I'm wondering if there is a better way.

I've changed my Contact and Mail buttons to work as 'softkey left' and 'softkey right', I'm sure I'm not the first one to think of this but I think its a cool idea. Since I set it up like that though, I'd like to change the 'Today' functions so those buttons retain their original functions while at Today. The way it sits now, my Calendar and Contacts buttons both open the calendar. (Try it on your own Axim, you'll see what I'm talking about)
