Mine is a brand new X51v, with a German WM5 A01. But I must change the OS to English, not only for better change of upgrade, but also to use Chinese and Japanese input software. They conflict with German versions.

No, X51v img file has a total diffirent header. I opened it with Ultraedit and searched, there is no same kind code for language!

For those who has Italian, French and German version of WM5 in a X51v, it is really a problem with ROM.
1. You cannot downgrade to WM2003, it works only with X50. not for X51v. I have tried this.
2. You cannot upgrade to WM5 A04 English, because there is a language conflict. Also tried.
3. There is one possible way, as I found in this forum, that is to download English A04 to CF card, or SD card, and force a ROM upgrade. It sounds to me a method with risk. I donot dare to try, as yet. But I am really sick about my German version of WM5 A01. It conflicts with my Chinese/Japanese input software.

I wrote to Dell German and get a telefone nummber which states he is only available after the new year.

We will see. I would rather get a new device with English OS preinstalled.

1. X51v is shipped with WM5, there is no WM2003 for it. Seeing that there are hardware differences between X51v and X50v, even if are able to get the X50v ROM on the X51v, it would probably not run.

2. You have to realize that switching ROM language is a violation of the EULA. It is not actually legal, and therefore don't expect Dell or Microsoft to help you. If they do, great. But just don't expect that they would.

3. SD update method is not working with X50v yet. I don't know about X51v.

I don't see any WM5 update except English one, so it is not easy to change the header since we don't have anything to compare it with.

Yes that is correct, you will loose your warranty if you switch your ROM language.

On the other hand, if you ever need to send it for repair, you can always switch back to the original language, right? ;)

Sounds hopeless. Does it mean that I have to use this German version of WM5 up to my death? My god!

i changed from spanish to english because i thought my axim was freezing due to an outdated rom, but when it kept freezing with the english rom, i called dell for a replacement. i switched back to spanish before i handed it in, and no problems at all.. i guess you would lose your warranty if your rom upgrade made your axim unbootable and you'd have to explain what you were doing.

Thanks to gwinter for this great writing.

This is the easiest way to change language to my X50v, and the only one that worked for me.

I have changed my X50v A02 Spanish to A05 English with you method, an then to WM5 with the regular update.

Could You look at these compare?
I think, somewhere there is language information:
