Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong..I tried the setsecurity thing and the icon but no change...Am I doing something wrong?? I am new to the ppc world so the basics are not so basic to me and also I am using an Ipaq, is that the problem?? Please help
Hilzfuld, The Icon change is done by .mui file that is applied to the WirelessIcon.exe on Axim X50v/VM5. I think on the iPaq the control of WiFi is done by another program, which is specific to HP iPaq. Sorry!
Are you using WM5?
(BTW WM3002SE was less restrictive, you can change the icons manually by using ResHack Utility :approve: ).

SolSie - any information about how to do the BT icon as well. I realize that resource hacker won't work but it should be possible to use a .mui file like we did with 2003SE?

Scott Seligman provided the .mui file, Scott explained how to create them as below:
"....mui files are just resource only DLLs.
1) Two ways: If you can copy the executable off of the device, the do that and open it in devstudio. Otherwise, you'll need to write an app to open up each executable on the device and LoadImage through all the possible resource IDs to find the ID of an icon in question. The first approach works for the bluetooth and wireless icons, the second was required for the ActiveSync icon. I have an app that does this, and assuming I can ever sit down and write my instructions for this process, I'll clean it up and include it.
2) Just the resources you want to override
3) Resources are resolution independent. For the tray icons, that means for VGA just include a 32x32 icon, for QVGA use a 16x16 icon. If memory serves correctly, you can't actually use an icon with both 32x32 and 16x16 images in it for the tray icon due to the way it works.
I should also note to be careful on reusing MUI files. I had some problems when I was playing around with this with devstudio not really deleting resources in files when it saved them. I'm not sure if there as a problem with DevStudio, or if PEBKAC, but it threw me for a loop a few times. It's best to create a new MUI file from scratch rather than using an existing one for a different app. Scott Seligman

I sent a request to Scott about BT icons but have not heard back from him. If you feel comfortable to play with devstudio, I have a set of BT icons, PM me if you need. In anycase, you can copy the BTCeTray.exe to create the .mui file but DO NOT copy BTCeTray.exe back to your Axim. This will not be usable again due to digital signature.

SolSie thanks for the offer but I'll wait for Scott or someone else with more experience than me to do this. After all my trials and tribulations with the WM5 upgrade I'm willing to live with the BT icon for now and not risk a hard reset :)
Me neither. I have reported this thread a few times already, asking them to stick this thread but... They never replied to me.
Thank you guys!
I think the mederators don't run on WM5 yet!

Avantgo recently released the new client 5.7 build 53 including support for WM5 and RSS. I am attaching here the .mui file allowing to view Avantgo to be viewed in VGA mode. Just install the client on your storage card and drop this mui file in the same directory. (make sure you disabled the security thing! see some posts above..)
"..AvantGo is currently alpha status for Windows Mobile 5.0. AvantGo software version 5.7.53 or above is required. See our downloads page to update your software. Users may encounter the following:
-Previous MS ActiveSync users will have to remove MS Active Sync and AvantGo before installing the MS Active Sync 4.0 for Windows Mobile 05. Otherwise we have seen that the desktop and the device will not communicate.
- Problems syncing with Active Sync: If you experience problems syncing through Active Sync you may initiate an AvantGo synchronization from the AvantGo browser. Click here for instructions.
- VGA display issues: AvantGo optimization for VGA screens are not yet available. All content will be double-sized by the device.
- Options panel layout issues: The browser options panels and AvantGo Connect may not show text or buttons properly for the available screen width.
AvantGo optimization for Windows Mobile 5.0 features are not yet available. AvantGo is not pre-installed on Windows Mobile 5.0 devices..."

If you have tons of .tsk files (Today wallpaper), store them on your storage card, not on your \My Documents folder in main memory. Make sure, on your storage card, delete the "Ignore My Docs" file and unlike WM2003SE, store the .tsk files from the root (e.g. \CF card not \CF card\My Documents)

I am working on my second go around with WM5 upgrade on my x50v. Last time it froze, I rolled back to 2003SE.
But those little blue disks kept calling to me from the closet shelf...
...so last weekend I upgraded again, following many tips from this thread. Thanks to all of you kind people. I used it at work today, and doing well so far.
Here are my tips and problems (sorry for the length):
1. No one here has so far addressed third party input systems. I use Fitaly keyboard and glossary v3.5. This works fine - BUT DO NOT set it as the default input in place of the qwerty keyboard. The OS will lock up requiring a hard reset eventually. I think that this may happen if you set ANY other input as default. Bug in the OS I think. Anyone else find this to be so?
2. In the calendar function, saving events goes VERY slowly, I suppose because the ROM memory is slower. Also, when I start the calendar things run slowly - going day to day can take 15 or 20 seconds. After a while it speeds up. Maybe because the data is loading into RAM, then it runs faster?
3. I, too, have had intermittant battery drain and CPU lock up at 624. I don't know why. I have done the AS manual scheduling thing, and when I look at running programs AS no longer spontaneously starts up in the background like it used to do. I have not installed ANY Today plug ins. I own Pocket Plus 3 (supposed to be WM5 compliant) but I have resisted installing it this go around. I am not sure what is running in the background every now and then to suck out my power. I'll just keep an eye on it for now. Someone suggested that the WiFi was intermittantly turning on by itself - but that should be pretty obvious by the blinking green light and icon.
4. Are these problems really DELL problems and not MS? After all, many devices are now running WM5 - by iMate, by HP. I am not aware that these devices are having these problems. Therefore, is this primarily a problem of how Dell implemented the software? Drivers etc? And, since we are all using (presumably) IDENTICAL devices here, and installing an IDENTICAL OS, why are we having such diverse experiences? Some with battery drain, others not? Some with sluggish performance, others snappy? What is going on here?
5. I am going to purchase Tweaks2k2. Have read about it for a long time but never gotten it. Now I want it for the Optimize WM5 cache setting. However, just so I know, How do you access the Registry Keys in this OS?
6. AS 4.1 has worked very well since I put it on today.
I'm sure I'll think of more later, but thank you all very much.
And YES, this should be a STICKY thread. Absolutely!
for those who are having problems installing themes. sbsh had a workaround. goto settings/today and highlight the theme you wish to use. locate the tsk file and copy to root. rename tsk to cab. install the file. goto settings/today/items exit. it seems to work without problems.
Anyone know a fix for the Remote-Ndis problem? My pocket pc just began this last night. Pocket pc networking box comes up and says that it wasn't able to assign an ip to the pocket pc. I had no trouble with it up to this point and right out of the blue this happened. Also, I use journal bar and it won't sync like it used to when you drop it into the cradle. You have to manually check the box that tells it it's online. Newsbreak doesn't seem to sync properly either. This was happening prior to the ppc networking issue, so I don't think it was that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yesterday my processor speed was behaving nicely. Today, not so.
When I put it on energy-saving, it shows 208 appropriately enough. When I go back to auto, back up to 624. I am running nothing. No Today plug-ins at all. I looked at Memory>running programs, shows nothing running. Still, something is pushing the processor speed up to max and burning up my battery power.
For now my fix is to run it in power-saving 208 mode. It seems to be just as fast as before. I'll see if it slows the battery drain. Next step will be to soft-reset -- for which I will run the tweaks2k2 3.14 I just installed ;-).
I have been playing around with a process viewer and found that when the auto setting maxes at 624 with nothing running the process filesys.exe is hogging the CPU. If I do a soft reset it goes away but this seems to be the culprit for me. I don't know what the process is trying to do at this point. Taking out CF/SD cards had no effect. Maybe some guys with a better understanding of the OS can shed some light on this?
The CPU auto stepping gives inconsistent results; I have a strong suspicion about the CPU stepping process is not working right at this code level(samething happened before on some previous A02-A04 WM2003SE). I hope folks who have upgraded to A04 on the X51v could confirm that.
If you set to any other settings but auto. The Axim seems to work properly as well as the battery behaves well.
