Does anyone else think this thread should be a sticky? It has so much helpful information that it deserves (at least I think so) to be a sticky. Just thought I would mention what was going through my head. :)

I wrote a small script that can modify the softkeys. To use it you have to install nScriptM.
Launch the script, select the softkey that you want to clear (then click on clear)or modify (then click change). To validate the change click OK otherwise to cancel the change click Cancel.
Don't forget to backup your machine before use, who knows what could happen
I did this script for my x51v. You can download it here.
Edit : sorry for the inconvenience log as user : host and password : host.
Copy it under \windows. Then go to settings\system a Soft Key icon will be available, from there you should be able to reassign software to your softkey without soft reset.
I just received my WM5 cd on Friday after 2 delays. It was supposed to ship on Dec 23rd. I installed the new OS yesterday with absolutely no troubles what so ever. I installed PB, iLauncher, Resco File Explorer, Hany Menu, Handy Switcher, Pocket Music and The Core Player. My axim is faster then ever before. Menus snap open and close quickly. My processor has not been stuck at 624. Only tweak I have done on my axim is the disable error reporting, I did that immediately so I dont know if there was an issue to begin with. I tested battery life yesterday. I have the 1800mah battery on my X50v. Used the core player to loop Dodgeball the movie at 40% brightness with volume at 50% and I got 4 hours and 25 mins of video play before my battery reached 6% remaining. I am now conducting a music play back test. Still after 24 hours of use, NO issues what so ever.

KlappDOgg, Could you check what ROM revision you have? A01 or something greater?
:)

That's the same one we all have. Let us know how things go after a couple of days.

You may be the lucky one!
Just goes to show - we really don't know what is going on here. I had the same problems many on this thread have documented. Yet others have had no problems at all.
Maybe this is also what is stumping Dell. Maybe they tested this OS, worked just fine as it did for KLappDOgg, and they figured everything was OK.

If you scan through the threads, you'll find quite a few of these. People who are totally happy with their WM5 upgrade and can't believe the rest of us are having so many problems. But wait a couple weeks and this guy will be back here, just like most everyone else, talking about how much he hates WM5 and is ready to go back to WM2003.
The problems are real, and they are burried deep in the ROM. Until Dell gives us a patch, or someone here finds a way to fix and re-compile the ROM, we all are stuck with the same problems.

Here's my crazy theory, based on my own experience with WM5 (BTW I'm still on my second stint of using WM5, the first was a disaster, this second is bearable so long as I tread lightly).
When WM5 is first installed everything seems OK.
A few days later things start to go bad.
A few more days later, with the help of the various hacks that are on this site, it becomes stable.
Then every time I installl a new program, things are unstable for a day or so then settle down.
I have been very slowly installing apps (first time around I just installed everything I needed right away).
The only problem I see with regularity is the disappearing CF card (Sprite tells me when it is missing because I have Sprite installed to the CF and have scheduled backups). And this problem always surfaces right after I have installed a new program, and settles down after a day or so.
Weird, I know, but there seems to be a pattern. Is anyone else thinking they see a pattern?
Heheh. Ok well I am seeing the Proc stuck at 624 quite often now. If I put it on anything other than auto it seems to work fine for me. Ill keep you posted.

After several hard resets and examining all the tweaks I was able to make my X50v with WM5 running better than it did with WM2003SE. Anyway I'm downgrading now, as I need my CDMA CF card to work. It doesn't work at all under WM5.
However, while I remember here what I did to get that excellent WM5 setup...
Steps:
1. Hard reset. It seems that each hard reset makes it better.
2. Turn off error reporting.
3. Apply ActiveSync trick (create new exchange connection using "fake" in all fields, tick off everything in the setting, set all to manual, tick off send immediately, delet exchange connection).
4. Install Resco Explorer with registry add-in (no FTP add-in), install latest Tweaks2k, install latest XCPUScalar (allows to monitor CPU load).
5. Change registry type to file in Tweaks2k.
6. Set HKLM\drivers\Builtin\StrataFMD\CompactionPrio256 to 255.
7. Apply Speed up display and cache tweaks in Tweaks2k.
8. Install latest WisBar Advanced 2, don't launch it.
9. Turn on all caching options for start menu and turn off animate battery meter option in WisBar Advanced 2. Apply the skin I use. Don't change Today skin.
10. Install MemMaid.
11. Using MemMaid delete odClientLauncCe, poutlook in StartUp folder.
12. In WisBar Advanced 2 select Use Smart minimize instead of close option (I found that it is better to keep frequently used programs open, as starting of the program loads CPU to 99% according to XCPUScalar meter).
13. Install PocketBreeze and other soft I use.
14. Check CPU load using XCPUScalar. When I don't use my X50v the CPU load is 0%. Everything works excellent! My Axim is very responsive, no delays in Start Menu, everything fine!!!
15. Install Sunnysoft Backup Manager.
16. Make self-extracting backup.
And here I am, with excellent WM5 setup!!! Though hardware issues still unresolved :( That's why I'm going back to WM2003SE.
PS: Always check your Startup folder for something you don't want to be there.
SolSie, I can't tell you how much we all appreciate what you have done with this thread. You are a real pioneer and humanitarian. You have inspired a legion of x50/WM5 testers who have gone further than I would have thought possible toward diagnosing and partially treating this illness.
Nevertheless, if Dell and/or MS does not come up with a fix soon, the patient may die. It seems more and more are rolling back. What I think is foolish is to return the upgrade disks, because when the fix comes out everyone will want to upgrade. No disks, no upgrade.
My opinion - don't give up, don't return the disks!
