Heart WM5 is here to stay! - WM5 Tips...

This thread is pretty much for X50 users who have upgraded to WM5 and decided to keep WM5. In addition to the daily Tips, at the bottom of this post, you can find other useful tips &tricks that I collect from various places... These Tips & Tweaks are mostly for A01/WM5 ROM. If you already have updated to later ROM. Use with caution!

10 Steps to have a "stress-free" WM5 upgrade
The below 10-steps are what I'd do if I have a x50/WM2003SE going to WM5. Pretty much all the tips are in this post:

1-Hard-reset
2-Connect to ActiveSync 3.8 as guest
3-Install AS 4.1-I assume there is no problem w/connectivity
4-Perform the WM5 ROM upgrade - direct USB connect/powered
5-When WM5 is up, disable WM5 error notification
6-Install a Registry editor (e.g. Resco Explorer Suite)
7-Apply the registry hack for I/O cache performance and hack for CF disapearing; hack to move temp file to Storage card instead of FlasROM as recommended by Shsmith:
"... On WM5 most of these now go to \Application Data\Volatile, which is in your (slow) flash memory...Open a registry editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\FileSys and edit the TempPath key.I changed mine to \SD Card\Volatile. You need to manually create the Volatile folder on your SD card."
8-Make sure NO battery meters are active as today plug-in
9-Apply ActiveSync "fake server" hack
10-Install Shsmith's Filesys Patch in \Windows\Startup

At this point, take off the cradle, check your CPU in auto-mode to see if the CPU is toggled thru different speeds. If not, just set at max. And perform a backup.

Do not forget to turn on your Axim before putting cradle to avoid "blank screen of death".

You should be good to go!

Tip of the day 01/02/06:
If you want to play the popular Video Podcast? (H.624 or .m4v/ MP4 format that Apple iTunes uses)
Download the latest Beta of TCPMP .71d and AVC plugins (.71e). The video in this format offers higher frame rate and better quality than Divx or Xvid.
http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/

FYI. I am using Juice as Podcast aggregator on my PC and MobSync to sync to my storage card, there are other methods as well..

For available video Podcast see here: http://www.podguide.tv/

Tip of the day 12/31:
CPU stuck at 624MHz...

1-Basically, it is good to set CPU clock at auto. When power is needed, the Axim automatically adjusts accordingly and that is the best way to conserve power and use the CPU on demand

2-However at current state, when you set CPU at auto and you see the processor stuck at 624MHz without any program running, at the same time you feel very slow response time, this situation is the result of a background thread (Filesys.exe) is running to scan/compact your ROM. This thread is started whenever the OS detects some major changes that might have occured in the ROM/RAM.

If you leave your Axim powered on for 10-15 minutes for this thread completes and you will see your CPU auto set will drop to 104MHz and your Axim is responsive again. If you need to use your Axim during this time then just set temporary CPU to max.

Most often people complain about this performance degradation and they turn on/off or soft reset or install/uninstall... these actions won't help improving performance at all but rather aggraving frustration since the filesys will kick in again.

I hope MS/Dell will address this issue (hopefully lower the priority thread of filesys.exe)....

According to Beemer, there are two registry keys under HKLM\drivers\buitltin\strataFMD that seems to be for that purpose: one for the thread priority on normal conditions (CompactionPrio256) and one for thread priority on critical conditions (CompactionCritPrio256)
Both of them are set for some weird values. We understand 0 is highesh and 255 is lowest.
I deleted both keywords and my X50v is quite snappy to me, some report that after they soft reset, one of these key cames back..Not on mine. They are gone.
Some also just set both to 255 and are seeing good results.

Again, just take whatever it's worth. YMMV

Tip of the day 12/26:
IF you use a card reader to backup your storage cards frequently. (If you have not done so, you should!) Please consider the below tool from Microsoft. You first backup the entire card image but subsequently, your previous backup and the storage cards will sync'up. Instead of deleting and make a new fresh backup. The free MS utility is SyncToy can be download

Skype just released PocketPC client V1.2 supporting WM5. Rejoice!
Get it here!

If you use Skype with your Axim/WM5/WiFi, do not forget this:
headset

For your PC. Use This!

Tip of the day 12/16:
Get Gmail on the go!

Now you can access your Gmail messages from the web browser on your mobile phone or device. Read and reply to your Gmail messages any time, anywhere.
* It's free. (But your wireless plan might still charge, so you might want to check with your provider first.)
* It's smart. It can handle attachments like photos and .pdf files.
Point your Axim's web browser (PIE) to http://m.gmail.com

Tip of the day 12/10:
Hop over to this Website for a very complete ActiveSync 4.x guide & troubleshoothing (from Chris De Herrera's Windows CE) http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/acti...shoot-as4x.htm

Tip of the day 12/7:
Reading RSS with WM5 no aggregator program
For those of you who do not wish to install any RSS aggregators on your PPC, but still wish to read RSS feeds on your PPC, use a simple dynamic webpage that converts any RSS feed to a mobile-friendly page. So you can use it to subscribe to RSS feeds and yet only need to use IE Mobile Favorites to sync the contents to your PPC.

Guides on usage:

Base link: http://mobile-sg.com/pie/rss.asp?s=

Instructions: Paste the url of the RSS feed to the end of the base link, e.g. http://mobile-sg.com/pie/rss.asp?s=h...ughts.com/xml/ then save it as Mobile Favorite. Next ActiveSync you have the contents on your PPC.
Read this: http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=51353

Tip of the day 12/5:
ActiveSync Toggle Free Utility
The idea here is to be able to turn off and off-load AS when you don't need to sync so AS does not take up the resource of your PC host and you can leave the Axim in its cradle with "ActiveSync-Free"

There is an old review here:
http://www.aximsite.com/reviews/index.php?qid=112

The Web site indicates WM5 is supported with the latest Beta of AS Toggle.

I downloaded and tried quickly, disable/enable AS requires to turn off Axim first. But it works great.

Once AS is disabled you can turn the Axim back on, when you need to resync, just turn the Axim off first, enable AS and turn the Axim back on.

Tip of the day 12/4:
Get Your Messenger Icon Back In Windows Mobile 5

Windows Mobile 5 devices come with Pocket MSN which wraps up MSN Messenger, Hotmail and a few other things in one interface. The problem is launching MSN Messenger is now a multitap process. If you want your favorite green snowman icon back so a single tap runs Messenger, follow these simple steps.

Start File Explorer on the device.
• Navigate to the \Windows folder.
• Scroll down and find instmsgr.
• Tap-and-hold on instmsgr and select Copy from the menu.
• Navigate to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs
• Select Menu|Edit|Paste Shortcut
• Tap-and-hold on the newly created shortcut and select Rename
• Name it MSN Messenger or whatever you want. (by Ed Hansberry/PPCThoughts)

Tip of the day 12/3:
Unleash power of your X50v/WM5/WiFi..Listen radio around the world in a very cool way. For details, see here: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showp...&postcount=373

Tip of the day 12/2:
24hrs Audio Streaming
Bookmark the below link to your Mobile Favorite:
Find a hotspot; turn on your WiFi; Launch PIE, go to this link and pick your state, your favorite radio stations and enjow 24hrs free streaming music/news..
http://www.thestreamcenter.com/pda/
Depending on the stream, WMP10 or TCMPCM will be launched to play.

Tip of the day 12/1:
Close programs
Even when you tap the x in the corner of a program, it may still be running in the background, in case you want to pull it up again. To completely exit a program you may need to:
Tap Start> Settings > System tab > Memory > Running Programs tab.
In the Running Programs list, tap the program you want to close, and tap Stop.
In most programs, you can also use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+Q to close the program.
Unless you have 3rd party utilities to perform the real close instead of minimize. On the Axim there is a built-in task switcher as applet in Settings. It has been reported " on WM5, actually just minimize the task instead of closing it seems to improve performance"

Tip of the day 11/30:
From Aximfish:
Do this mod at your own risk. For those who know which end of a soldering iron to pick up, here is a hardware solution. This is for when all you want to do is charge the Axim in its cradle and ActiveSync keeps turning on trying to sync. Open the cradle by removing the four grey rubber feet. (Try not to lose them as I did.) Remove the four tiny Philips screws. Install a miniature double pole single throw toggle switch in the side. Wire the switch in series with the green and white data wires. (The red and black are the DC--don't monkey with them.) Now you can cradle your Axim for recharging without ActiveSync thinking it has to turn on the Axim and sync every X minutes. This works great for overnight charging. You are supposed to be able to set the AS software to accomplish this, but it doesn't always work;the switch does! The switch also makes it easy to reset the connection without having to unplug and plug in the Axim. My first PalmPilot sync cradle had a momentary switch to reset the syncing process and I missed that feature on the Axim.

Tip of the day 11/29:
Just in case you are new to the X50v. This is a "must have". Jon Misurda and Emulamer created (while ago..) this free utility that allow you to adjust to your liking various audio settings as well as create several audio profiles. This utility works great on WM5..
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showp...&postcount=314

Tip of the day 11/28:
Bluetooth Fast On/Off switcher

If you like to have an icon to turn on and off bluetooth without having to go through the menus.

Luckily, Gwinter created a small utility (attached below link).
Just drop it on your Axim and create a shortcut.

Thx Gwinter! BTW I did change the icon to 3-D look!
(I think, you can do the same for WiFi with WirelessOnOff.exe or WirelessPower.exe..)

Tip of the day 11/26:
ActiveSync Performance affected by Avantgo Settings!
As you know there is no way to tell ActiveSync how often to sync. After I installed the latest Avantgo client, I notice ActiveSync tries to sync very frequently (every few minutes) and the Axim responses painfully slowly while synch'ing. Look at ActiveSync window, Avantgo is always the longest item to sync...

So I went out to www.Avantgo.com and find out, that I have to setup the sync interval rigth at their Web site. Just log in to your account, select manage channels and you can click on each to change the interval (per channel). So it is recommended to scatter the interval so all the channels will not be sync'ed at the same time. The default is "sync at the same time and very frequently". This really helped ActiveSync to behave correctly. No performance whie on cradle.

BTW, since Avantgo now supports WM5 (still in Beta) and RSS. I decided to subcribe ($20/year) so I can download whole bunch of RSS news at high picture resolution,...It's great. Don't forget to read the first post for the tip to make Avantgo "VGA aware"

Tip of "Black Friday"
In the US, today is the busiest shopping day of the year..To keep the tradition, I went out scouting some good deals that you might want to consider for your Axim/WM5

1-Resco Multimedia Suite (Pocket Radio, File Explorer Suite, MP3 Recorder) use the secret code THANKS for %20 off
http://pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=13455
Update: I was sckeptical about the Resco Radio..But boy, after using it..WOW..Hidden gem! what a killer app. I've tried other radio streaming method, but this is really painless. Just turn on..WOW.:approve: Combined with my Plantronics Pulsar BT stereo headsets...Heaven!...Oh wait..., my wife told me..Just use her little FM portable radio..It's the same... Oh well...My comments: Not geek enough

2-While you are there, thow in these very nice WMP10 skins:

The author is asking some volunteers to "stretch test" these skins. Enroll here: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=105302

Tip of the day 11/25:
Windows Media Player 10 Playlist Editor
Windows Media Player 10 was a nice improvement so that users could play purchased music on their PocketPCs, but WMP10 itself lacks some features.
Perhaps the most annoying of these (aside from the button mapping problems) is the inability to create and save playlists on the device. Playlist Editor was designed to import your files into a playlist format that WMP10 can play: ASX. The Playlist Editor adds the ability to load and save M3U and PLS playlists as well.

Now you can use "Import" function to create a playlist from a whole directory as well as single songs.
Jon Utility works great with WM5! Here is how to use it.
1-Open the program
2-I assume you have your music stored in one folder and you want to create a playlist from; just click on Edit, Import. If you add individual songs, go to #4
3-Browse (use the softkey UP, etc..) to your folder and select it
4-Use the + button to add more songs
5-Save the playlist to your storage card - It is best to create a folder prior to this (e.g. \Storage Card\My Playlist) and give it a name
6-You can create additional Playlists if needed..
7-Upon completion, turn on WMP10, Menu, Update library; search, done...
8-Your Playlists will be recognized by WMP10 library (Make sure you select your Storage Card where your songs & Playlists are located)
9-Now, just go to Library in WMP10 and use drop down menu to select PlayList then click on softkey Play
10-If you have new songs to add; just use Jon's utility again, load the playlist, Add more songs...You do not need to update WMP10 library again.
See some screenshots here: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...248#post908248

BTW, in your My Music folder, if you organize as below:
\My Music\Artist Name\Album name\song, song,...
You can go to Amazon.com, find the album, right mouse click on the album cover, save it as picture and name it Folder.jpg, drop it in the music folder at same level as your song. Then WMP10 will show your album cover when playing...

Tip of the day 11/24:
Have you tried the latest MS transcriber as input method?

Transcriber lets you take down a phone number, take notes and more, just as easily and naturally as writing on a piece of paper. Transcriber recognizes all handwriting, be it cursive, printed or a combination of both...Give it a try! It is much improved on WM5

1-Open a new Note, select Transcriber as your input (instead of keyboard)
2-Click on the bottom left for option, select the writing direction. (2nd box for right hander), click OK
3-Now write something in diagonal (start bottom left to top right) and you will see your hand writing will be translated to typed letter..

Transcriber can be used as input in any application!

In addition, if you want to jot down a quick note, a quick phone number air a quick calculation. Use this freeware Calcnote http://www.inesoft.com/eng/index.php?in=calcnote
Calcnote has transcriber built-in as well.

Tip of the day 11/23:
While we are waiting anxiously the next WM5 ROM on the X50v. I am sharing this tip, which is mostly cosmetic.

Spb ToPlay plug-in (available for free) is designed to provide you with an easy way to start listening to the music from your Media Library right from Today screen. Spb ToPlay supports only Windows Media Player 10 only. This today plug-in can be stand-alone, run under Spb suite or as a tab in PocketBreeze. Try with different sizes, color and shape...
• Play and pause playback
• Switch to next or previous track
• Adjust volume
• Stop the playback completely
Download here: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/prod...Play_setup.exe
Screenshot here:
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/prod...lugins.html?en

Tip of the day 11/21:
If you have tons of .tsk files (Today wallpaper), store them on your storage card, not on your \My Documents folder in main memory. Make sure, on your storage card, delete the "Ignore My Docs" file and store the .tsk files from the root (e.g. \CF card)

Tip of the day 11/21:
To avoid the "White Screen Problem", always turn the Axim on before putting it to cradle, this seems to help.

Tip of the day 11/20:
From: Ken http://www.sbsh.net/forums/index.php...opic=6693&st=0
.... There is a bug in the Dell's use of Microsofts Trusted Application software. When you install new software a popup appears telling you that this isn't a trusted application do you want to install anyway? The problem is that when you say yes install it anyways it oks the main executable, but some resources that the program calls such as MUI files will not run. This causes many programs to work poorly on the x51v. Just by installing the software from Tweak2k it disables the Trusted Apps on the Dell, and you will find you have fewer software problems.
Fix can be found here: By Citanic http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a...reviews&id=702

Tip of the day 11/19:
If you want to change the look of your "dull" WiFi icon on the bottom of your Axim. Just drop the file (attached in the post #204 of this thread) in to your device \Windows directory and soft-reset. Courtesy of Scott Seligman.
If you don't have Tweaks2k2 installed, do not forget to run the setsecurity utility first to disable the securty checking for the mui file to work :approve: :approve:
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...230#post901230
For International user just rename 409 into your national code found here: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;246664

Tip of the day 11/18:
OK, Now the expert confirmed: From Citanic (Author of Tweaks2k2) "....I decided to test the Cache size running SPB Benchmark for different Cache sizes and in that way to find out if these registry hacks works or not..... The conclusion is that having the CacheSize = 4096 (Dec) will increase the general performance in 20% .... The 4096 is 0.3 % faster than a CacheSize of 8096 (Dec).

In the same way that I found that some of these registry keys really work I did not find any evidence of these two keys doing any good:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ MSFlash\FATFS\DataCacheSize=0x1FA0(4096)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ MSFlash\FATFS\Flags=0x28(40)

In fact they did not exist in my machine neither in the WM5 emulator.

Taking in consideration these tests I have decided to include this trick in the next release of Tweaks2K2. That will be apply using the optimum value of 4096 and only changing the following registry keys that are the only that gave me some possitive results in my tests...." Thank you Citanic!

Tip of the day 11/17:
Few reminders:
Perform a hard reset before you upgrade to WM5. Upon completion, please check the below:

a-Set Axim at max 624MHz;
b-Make sure there are no CPU/battery monitor running as Today Plugins;
c-Disable error reporting
d-Enable cache as below described
e-If you use Wisbar, PocketInformant download the latest beta. For WA, check: cache program Icon on startup; uncheck: Don't cache background image. If you use PI, remove poutlook in \Windows\Startup if it is there.

Tip of the day 11/15:
Just set CPU clock to max 624MHz seems to keep the Axim snappy consistently and ironically solves the battery drain when Axim is off (I never experienced this problem.. but reported by other users who had this issue)

Tip of the day 11/12:
The easy way to determine if your X50v/WM5 is running optimally:

1-Close all programs
2-Go to Settings-System Tab-Power-CPU
3-Check on auto CPU clock

And observe if your CPU clock drops gradually to 104 MHz. If not (e.g. stays solid at 624 MHz) than you are having a background task(s) taking up all the cycles and as a result, you'd see sluggish in performance.

You can go over the below tweaks and try them out.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Like most of you, I struggled with my WM5 upgrade for 2,3 days. Many times the ideas of rolling back came to my mind...I do need my Axim functioning for my work. But I persist......

Knowing myself, if I rollback, just for few days then I will be itching to roll forward later, so why not tackle once for all...

My Axim is mostly my work tool but foremost is my hobby and I accept to face challenges. I started setting very low expectation and prepared for a bumpy road ahead and today I am very happy to report:
I overcome all challenges and I am moving forward...

My X50v/WM5 today gets back its own glory (See below screenies!)...while I am still looking for further improvements with new tweaks & tips..My X50v/WM is functional...

Few problems I encountered along the upgrade as decribed below, I overcome them all. Be patient and if I can be helpful, let me know!

1-Blue Screen of Death on with ActiveSync 4.x/USB on my Thinkpad laptop
2-Sudden hard-reset after few software incompatibility
3-Install the wrong verson of Wisbar Advance (.exe installer instead of cab)
4-Backup takes very long time and becomes unusable
5-Message "trust app.." preventing install 3rd party software

In the same process, I also test the WM5/Persistent Storage usefulness by running at max speed CPU and let the Axim runs out of power completely (2hrs on a 1100 maH battery), The Axim turns off at 4% remaining and goes to sleep mode, it can not be turned on at this point; wait for another 30mn to make sure the backup battery is also drained. .
Replace later a full charged battery, turn on Axim and voila, everything is there as before including add-on software, Today plugins, etc.....Not even soft reset needed. Amazing....

However, beware if you have a sudden hard reset (especially when you first install back all your 3rd party apps). You PIM information is still there but the Axim is somewhat not usable..All the settings, program entries, registry entries are gone. So make sure you have a good backup (BTW, be patient, the new backup takes a loooong time) on your storage card. Persistent storage does not offer much help here..

My main 3rd party programs: Wisbar Adv; PocketBreeze; iLauncher; WeatherPanel; PocketMusic; PI; Contact pro, iGuidance, etc..

I am using now successfully: PIM, BT GPS; Listen Podcast, Music, Music videos, Beta (Core Player)....X50mix, Skype (VoIP); BT stereo headset (using Plantronic + Dongle), etc...

Below are fixes I collected from various posts. I will keep this updated as more fixes coming in (Thanks to its authors!)
Please note these are just tips reported, they are not 100% proven and results might vary

I put a rating from * to ***** for effectiveness (based on my own validation!). Your mileage may vary...

:exc: As always, do these at your own risk. Perform a full backup prior to any registry changes. :exc:

If you use X50Mix, after settings, just close the program, the settings will be kept even cross soft/reset. You can launch X50mix again when you need to change the setting. This way you don't have a X50mix task running in the background and takes 584MB of your precious RAM.

If you have tons of .tsk files (like me), store them on your storage card not on your \My Documents folder in main memory. Make sure, on your storage card, delete the "Ignore My Docs" file and store the .tsk files on the root (e.g. \CF card)

Backup Backup Backup *****
At this stage, only the built-in b/k utility is available. Please perform b/k as often as you can. BEWARE the b/k takes accessively longtime (15-30mn) on both back up and restore operation. Be patient! My b/u image is about 33MB stored on my storage card.

Before you restore, do not forget to hard-reset first. W/o H/R all the Windows components are still in the same state as before

After restore and re-sync with AS 4.x, you might find lots of duplicate entries in your Outlook calendar, Contacts, Notes, etc.Use this free utility to remove duplicate. The utility called: Outlook Duplicates Remover 5.0, which can be found here http://www.data-core.de/MST/msoutloo...emein/odr5.htm

Do not copy ROM modules to your PC *****
I tried to copy the BTTray.exe to my PC to see if I can change the Icon. The Axim lets me do that, but it did not let me to copy it back and also mess up the original..due to new Dell digital certificat, etc...This costs me a hard-reset. :realmad:

Software Compatibility List *****
Maintained here by Jukov: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=98578
Another software compatibility list w/user comments:
http://www.wm5fixsite.com/index.php?...tpage&Itemid=1

Note: Some of 3rd party software might fail at install is due to the lack of a "Trusted App Certificate..". WM5 likes to have programs and drivers signed with a rather expensive certificate (upwards of $2000USD)...There are few developers can affort that. See here: http://x51v.blogspot.com/2005/09/hou...-have-bug.html
The work-around is try to use .cab file if available (e.g. Wisbar Advance), or if you have Tweaks2k2, which turns off automatically this checking. BTW Tweak2k2 (www.tweaks2k2.com) just released the 3.13 version, which allows to customize the 2 soft-buttons to your liking. You can download the 3.13 release here: http://www.tweaks2k2.com/portal/file...file.php?lid=7

ActiveSync 4.0 turns on automatically/Processor stuck at 624MHz ******
There were several posts indicating ActiveSync turns on by itself when the Axim is not cradled and eventually drains the battery. It never happens to me. Circumpvention provided by Invid:

Disabling automatic syncing (and activesync startup) did. The new activesync is a dog, even worse than it was on WM2003SE and makes my x50v almost useless while running. I will list the steps to disable it. Note that you will still be able to sync, but AS will no longer start up on it's own.

1) Start up AS on your x50.
2) Tap the menu tab/soft key and tap "Add Server Source"
3) Configure a server source with a dummy IP address, user id, password and domain name; these do not have to be real
4) Once configured you should have another sync source show up on your main AS screen...continue on.
5) Tap the menu soft key again and you should see that the sync schedule option is no longer greyed out.
6) Change your schedule from a timed automatic start of AS to manual under both fields
7) If you try to sync now, AS will try to contact your imaginary exchange server and that will take forever until it times out, so you can now delete the exchange server from your list of sync sources. Your changes to the sync schedule will remain and will survive soft resets too.

If you have a switcher app running (like vbar) you will find that when you close AS it will now stay closed and you should see a corresponding increase in speed.

Post some feedback and let others know if this worked for you. I am not really sure if this is what sped up my x50v but I know that it no longer slows down to a craw on a regular 5 minute schedule and AS only starts when in the cradle or when I start it for BT syncing.

Resco File Explorer Today Meters Plug-in slowdown WM5 ***** Andebhz
Update from Citanic (Tweaks2k2): The today screen plug-in from Resco (the battery meter on it) cause the battery to drain fast making it very hot. Another Add-in with this same problem is the Top Bar Battery Meter of SPB Pocket Plus. The weird thing is that SPB PP has a battery meter in the Today Screen add-in and that one does not cause any problem.
I have read somebody with the battery draining issue saying that he was using the Magic Button, I'm asuming that he was using too the battery meter of that program, but I have not confirmed this one...
more: http://x51v.blogspot.com/2005/11/x51v-mysteries.html

For now I will turn off all Today plug-ins related to metters...

I tested and (confirmed by others) that iLauncher Meters don't cause this phenomenen...(BTW they are absolutely gorgeous!)
The topic can be found here:
http://www.sbsh.net/forums/index.php...iew=getnewpost

The disabling all the battery meters & Cache hacks for me are the best performance improvement I ever had on my X50x/WM5. The performance now is very snappy and stable, The CPU utilization with auto option when idling drops to 104MHz and re-adjusts very quickly.

Real Power Off: Dell has implemented the Real Power off option on the X51v. The X50v WM5 update does not come with this feature

I like the "I am moving forward not backward." line. Did you pick that up from Dell or MSFT? Do you call paying for an OS and then spending tons of time trying to get it right and still not quite working right "moving forward"? Or what is stated as the features set of the new OS doesn't quite match what you paid for? Where is that USB Mass storage driver, hmmm??

This is a typical MSFT scam. Sorry for the rant

WM5 is moving forward for me. I like it.
I have some problems if I leave my CF card in. So I stopped leaving it in.
Not really having any other problems.
I hope they fix the problems soon, but I like it more than WM 2003.

I'm going back to WM2003. I don't think the few small benefits make up for the absolute headache. If my device crashes on WM2003 I always have a back-up instead of soft resetting this crap hole WM2005 every 5 minutes. I finally got a full sync in after dinking with it for 3 days. I also don't like regressing but enough is enough!

Too bad you feel that way. I have WM5 for 3 days now and the only real problem I have found is that sometimes my Outlook appointments do not get synced to the axim. I also believe that WM5 is a step forward.

At the very least our device's OS is being updated. If you don't think so ask those Palm users still waiting for OS6 (long announced before WM5)

I've had my x51v for about a week now and, despite intital misgivings, I don't think I'd go back to 2003.

I've gotten used to WM5's little quirks and the only thing that I really miss is a decent bluetooth interface.

I expected WM5 to have bugs, it's a micro$oft product after all, but it's not half as bad as I expected it to be.

Sorry to make you feel that way. As I mentioned,I am using my Axim as work tool, but also as my hobby, I play with it, modify it, tweak it, break it, rebuild it, I install the latest betas of all the software I have.... and I pay the price for being on the "bleeding edge" side sometime, but I am embracing changes with a positive perspective . Your purposes might not be the same, I understand. :)

BTW: In real life, I am working for a company that is Microsoft & Dell competitor...I am just an enthousiast.

Peace!

WM5 A02 (or 3)will be more polished

Whether or not the x50v will get that upgrade is up in the air...

If I didn't need my axim to absolutely work for a few weeks, I'd dedicate my time to figure out the kinks out of WM5. For now, I'll wait for an update and wait again for the happy "forward-looking" people of aximsite to figure out the kinks of that update as well before taking the plunge (again) :/

No reason to think that it wouldn't.

Back on topic...after a long wait I finally got my CD today and I'm now waiting for WM5 to finish formatting BIS. Looks to be about 90% through...can't wait! *gets all giddy*

Something still needs to be done with the BT stack. You can't even transfer files or dial contacts via bluetooth anymore.

Agreed. I've been waiting for the USB hosting capability and was perturbed that it wasn't present in the x51v. Maybe in a service
pack or later axim model ?

Someone asked earlier and I looked it up on MSDN. They say it is in there but neither I nor others on other boards have gotten it to work. This is sad given it would have been kind of neat and perhaps would have offset some of my complaints. Hey if WM5 A02 works better than I will go for it. Otherwise... WM 2003 is where I will stay.
