x50v Warranty Extension

The warranty on my x50v is coming to an end (24 days remaining) and I'm replacing it for a second time due to wear-and-tear on the 3.5mm audio jack. Each time, I receive about 2-3 months of usage out of it before I have to have it replaced (I originally bought it used, halfway through its 1-year warranty).

I looked at Dell's site today while filing a complaint with the hardware support, but could not find any links to extend handheld warranties -- they plainly offer desktop and notebook extended warranties, but nowhere could I find one that was applicable to my x50v.

Any ideas as to where to go for this?

Mods: Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but there isn't a section in the Support forums that this seemed to fit into.

you replace the device every two months due to wear and tear on the audio jack?

Does it stop working or what?

If your getting only 2 to 3 months out of a PDA, I'd say don't buy the extended warranty. Not that you don't need it, but rather Dell may at some point say enough.

I don't know what your doing to it, but they may see the issues more as wear and tear and less as mfg defects. To that end they will no longer provide replacements.

Finally I'd examine how you use it, clearly 2-3 months is not normal and either your being to hard on it, being to picky, or Dell has some serious QC issues with the jack. The results will be he same Dell will not provide replacements.

Not trying to flame you, but from the outside looking in, it is certainly odd to have this type of problem on an on going basis.

Zach - Can't help you with info re: warranty extension, but can commiserate re: the headphone jack. I had my x50v replaced last month for the same reason.

The sound coming through the headphones was distorted (hard to describe, but it basically didn't seem to have a good connection at the point of the jack). I assume that this was due to my pulling/pushing on the headphones (ie, would wrap the wire tightly around the case when not using), which were in the device 24/7. Could this be the problem you're having?

In any case, Dell was nice enough to replace the unit for me and now I'm taking greater care (since it's my sole MP3 player).

This does seem to be a QC problem. We use the X50 in our company and the headset jacks do go bad every 1-3 months. They are plugged in all day (8 hours) 5 days a week. Most users don't abuse it and they still go bad. We have been testing a symbol's unit for the last two months and so far the headset jack is fine. The X50 does seem to have a QC problem with the jack based on our experience.

@ Javelin and Mayflynn
As ibergu, I use my Axim as a nicer MP3 player. Not only that, but I jack it up to my car, and continue the tune jamming. It doubles as a video player, saving me hundreds of dollars on an in-car DVD player (and since it already jacks into my car stereo, I get nice surround sound). As such, It goes through about 6 plug-in un-plug cycles per day. I have made sure to reduce the tension on the jack this time around, by purchasing an L-shaped connector for the headphone. This relieves the jack of much of the stress and weight of the cord itself (as any force on the jack would be at a very queer angle, instead of within the socket itself).

@ ibergu
The symptoms you described are what I am experiencing. Oddly enough, for this PDA, only the left channel is effected. The issue is definitely due to bad contacts within the headphone jack. A local audio store owner said that it may have to due with the fact that since they have to cram so much into these devices, doubled with the fact that the jack isn't normally used a lot (and thus would be designed as such), that the actual solders on the PCB could be weak, and thus breaking. He's the one that suggested I use the L-connector to lessen stress on the cable, and even suggested that I go so far as to leave the L-connector in 24/7, and plug headphones/other jacks into the L-connector, so as to have less connect/disconnect cycles on the PDA's jack itself. (Note that I didn't go talk to him until about a week or so ago, and they staticy/distortion started a few days ago --- it was too little, too late).
