x50v has more options. x51v, you're stuck with WM5 with it's list of problems and shortcomings, but 128 more of built in storage that most people probably wouldn't utilize that much anyways.
The x51/v does not have a backup battery i.e. it soft-resets when the main battery is swapped. Since I have four batteries and swap them: x50/v!
The X51 uses WM5, which does not store data in RAM, this means when you remove the battery, you do not lose anything.
I vote X50v. Although I have not used an X51v, and at the moment don't have any PDA, I want to get an X50v agian. With the X51v you get what? 128mb more of built in storage? Please... a 128 MB SD card costs how much? Oh thats right, you can't find them in stores anymore, so grab a 256mb for $30 instead of paying a hundred more for the 'model upgrade'.
I have x51v, and its running like charm. No problem. Tried lots of 3rd party software which was developed for previous windows. Did not find any compatibility problems so far. So, go with x51v, don't spend money on older technology. the guys who are saying for x50v, will soon have to upgrade to WM5 anyway. All the new version of softwares will be released for that. And x51v has better support for WM5.

By the time new software is running on WM5, WM5 has been patched enough to be as usable and stable as WM2003, new devices will be on the market with more RAM, internal storage, and so on.
I do not "have to" upgrade my X50v. I will simply buy a new device in about a year when all the BS is sorted through.
Meanwhile, the X51v has 64 MB extra ROM, which is all wrong. Somebody misinterpreted the memo that said it needs 64 MB more RAM.

If you have a favorite application that won't work properly on the x51, then x50 would be a better choice. However, I've had both and the biggest 3 problems I've had with x51v are 1) battery drain from certain apps 2) soft resets because the x51v wouldn't turn on with the power button 3) Bluetooth is broken.
I've since resolved 1&2 by removing SPB PocketPlus and replaced it with MagicButton (hey and it's free). Some people won't use the Axim without PocketPlus, whereas I can find other alternatives.
Not having to reinstall everything when the battery runs out (among other small improvements in OS) is worth all the hassle (which really isn't much of a hassle).
