Axim slow after rollback to 2003

Hi guys,
I installed win 2005 on my axim but found it too slow and buggy for my taste so I decided to roll back using dell's tool.
After the upgrade, my axim is totally slow, it takes several seconds to paint the screen. I've tried soft and hard resets and no luck...

any advice?

Give it a few minutes. If you remember, switching to WM5 involved a format of the ROM (with progress bar).

I don't think the progress bar shows up on the rollback. Give it about 10-15 minutes to do it's thing after a reset and it shouls return to normal.

I've done that - still, very slow. for example, the 'align screen' screen that pops up directly after a hard-reset take 3x longer to render(draw). once you touch the 'target' it moves verrrryyy sloooowwwly to the next 'target'

also - is it me or did my BIS disappear? (Built in Storage - is it gone?)

Mine did the same thing. I had to set the processor speed to max. Then I could set it to the other values. It seems that this field doesn't get set properly and you need to do it manually..

I don't know if I would call my X50v "slow" after rolling back to WM 2003SE, but it certainly has not felt quite the same after the rollback. Some things seem less stable than they were before I attempted the upgrade to WM 5.0, like wi-fi. I also had a couple instances where my PDA froze on a white screen to the point where I had to remove the battery in order to get it back. Even a hard rest would not work here. This never happened before I rolled back.

It could be that I have a different ROM version after rolling back. I had WM 2003 SE w/ ROM version A04 before upgrading to WM 5.0. After the rollback, I now have ROM version A05.

Mine was that way too after the roll back. The align screen was painfully slow then after it completed I installed a few things. Performed several resets and finally a hard reset. The speed cam back to normal on the align screen and I haven't had a complaint yet.

Here is an idea, please keep in mind that I have not tried this. How about loading (kind of like reloading) the "Dell Axim X50x VGA System Update for Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition" or the one for QVGA systems.

If for some reason the ROM did not unfold properly, this would reload the ROM. A05 worked great for me, but I guess my Axim X50v is haunted or something because it also works great with WM5.

I don’t have a x51v, but from what I have read on this forum the answer is NO.

I had the same issue. I performed the upgrade to WM2005, and got corrupted data on my BIS (i.e. files, including those that were part of the OS, were diappearing and/or becoming corrupt). I rolled back to WM2003 and had the strange SLOOOOOW speed issue. Even after I managed to get into the control panel to adjust my CPU speed to max, it was still just abnormally slow. I upgraded back to WM2005 and had the same corruption issue. At that point I said "screw it" and called Dell, who agreed to replace it. Sorry I don't have a fix for you!

If you leave the X50 sit for 20 to 40 min, it will be back to normal after the roll back. as Khris stated Axim is still reformating the BIS and this takes a while.

Yeah - it took a while but I think everythings OK again... but it sure was sluggish on the first couple of reboots!

I have same problem b4 after downgrade to wm2003se. But I restore ROM to A1 and then upgrade back to A5 ROM. The problem solved.

After roll-back, the system needs to format the storage space (BIS). It will do this during the first boot and it will stay at the Dell logo screen until it is complete. You'll need to wait around 10 minutes for this to complete. If you get impatient and start tapping the screen, the system will boot but continue to format the storage in the background, hence everything slows to a crawl. The system will format the storage whenever the size of the loaded ROM image change, for example upgrading to WM5, or changing to Japanese ROM.

Some people think that for some reason the ROM is corrupted during ROM upgrade and want to reload the ROM. I think such a case is very unlikely since:
1. The ROM file has a checksum in the header. The upgrade program will ensure the ROM image is not corrupted (unless you tamper with the ROM and calculated a new checksum for it).
2. Data communication to the device should also have error checking, which means there shouldn't be error when sending the image to the device.
If you do in fact have corrupted ROM, it would probably be caused by hardware failure.

So, the best thing to do after upgrade or roll-back is, leave the system alone until it is ready.
