I see lots of "constructive crticism" of the X50 on the forum, but having come from the Palm platform, I have to say of I love the Axim X50 and WM5. So much easier to be productive and connected to the desktop than Palm. Just look at the archaic Palm Desktop. How does the X50 compare to other Pocket PCs?

Hard question to answer. The Axim series has always been the best bang-for-the-buck, giving users great features at a consistantly lower price than comparable models. The X50v is a fantastic value, pairing a VGA screen with a 624mhz processor for a very competitive price.
On the other side, its fairly easy to agree that HP makes the best pocketpc's, when it comes to performance and quality. But for people like me it just isn't worth it -- I only keep a PDA for a couple years and the higher HP pricetag doesn't make sense.
One other point that may be temporary, is that HP seems to be doing a better job of supporting WM5. I have used two new HPs and the new OS is fast and almost flawless. Dell's first release of WM5 for the X50v is a bug-riddled mess, and as of today they still haven't given an indication as to when (or if) they will offer a fix. I know I'm comparing an OEM device with an upgraded device, but the comparision is still fair.

As an ex-Palm user with an X50v I agree that you can do more with a PPC device, but I still think that Palm is still the right choice for a lot of people.

Correct, correct and correct. I have an x50v and one of my Deans (I work at a University) has an X50 so he can use Wi-FI. Everyone else in my department has a low-end Palm of some type. When they only want calendar and contanct info, $99-$199 makes a lot more sense than what we paid for our beatuies! :approve:

really funny, I start with the Palm Pro (1 MB...yes is true...), then purchase the III (2 MB...), then I got the IIIc (in colors...64 colors..) then the M515, was a great palm for their time, 32 (or 16 MB I am not sure) and SD slot. beautiful, in that moment was Windows CE, there was no point to compare... then WinCE2002, still palm beats, but I try the Sony Cle with camera and 32 MB and Memory stick for 128, I really love it, then I move to a Visor35 (viewsonic...) Nope, went back to Palm, got a Tungsten C with wifi, then the T3 with Bluetooth, I actually was really in love, but a friend gave me a X30 and that was the first time I was unfaithfull to the PALM. Because I sold my T3 and buy a X30, Men, I was in love, then I purchase the X50v, i think I will keep it for a while...yeah sure, let me save some money ad I will buy the next one after the X51, my excuse, I tell my wife the true, Thank God I am trading Palms and PDA¨S and not wifes, she agree...
The difference between Palm und PPC is not as big as implied. I too moved over from the Palm world, mainly due to the lack of recent innovation. On the software side, in several respects (database, outliner etc.) the palm software certainly is superior than the PPC's. Handling and even response is generally quicker. If I open large database files with Smartlisttogo on my T3, it opens much quicker than comparable files on the x50v (both on the SD card), same ist true for most other files.
Palms like the T3 offer an extraordinary styling and very good performance, subjectively even quicker than the x50v (but of course without multitasking).
They are still choices of comparable value, but PPCs innovate much more and so the difference between both systems will continue to increase.
So it certainly is not a question of brain to keep a palm. Not yet.
Ex-Palm user here also. Last unit was also a T/3. Switched to a HP Ipaq 4150 for the WiFi that the T/3 did not have. Let me tell you it was a pain because of all of the little applications I had found (free I might add) for my Palm. I have since moved up to a X51V. I would not go back but do not regret my Palm times. To bad they have not kept up with the PPC world. I enjoy the multitasking, rotated screen, ROM storage and 256mb of storeage. I also have added applications that do not store information. I use the X51Vs main tools plus Excel and Word to store all of the information necessary to my comfort zone.
