A longtime ago, I had a socket bluetooth card and it came with a utility to turn IR off which gave you 2 extra com ports. Would this work with MS BT stack?

I don't think you can add ports because I don't think that the axim will connect to more than one device at a time. I don't have a cell phone or gps, but I use bluetooth to sync and transfer files between several devices. When you switch devices you basically have to re-pair or at least re discover services. I don't know if the widcom stack would be better at switching devices.
Just like my BT headset, it also only remembers which device it was connected to last.
The axim can connect with more than one device at a time via bluetooth. I am using a bluetooth headset to listen to voice commands from my bluetooth gps. I use widcomm of course since it is the only stack that allows use of a mono headset (not A2DP). I can even activesync, send files, listen to music and do PAN networking simultaneously.
I dont need to use both Bluetooth GPSs at the same time (though it should be possible).
My problem is that I can only configure 1 GPS at a time in the X51v. If I want to swap to the other GPS, then I have to delete the BT config for the first GPS to free up a COM port. I can then configure the freed COM port for the second GPS. A PITA.
I dont see why I cant have more COM ports in the list to choose from in the BT manager.

It is possible. You just need GPSGate to share gps signal to several applications by allowing you to create different virtual ports that your other applications can use.

No. you dont understand. I dont need to share GPS data between multiple applications (which I agree GPSgate would solve)
I want to configure multiple GPS's in my Axim. But I cant do that because there are not enough COM ports (7and8) to choose from in the list

That's what I was trying to tell you earlier. By using GPSGate you can use your existing com port, create a new virtual com and use that virtual com port for the application that require it.

the problem is not in the applications, it is in the *Bluetooth manager* where you connect BT devices (eg GPSs) to COM ports (incomming and outgoing devices). COM7 and 8 are the only 2 lines in the list. This is not enough COM ports for all my devices.
I know that the problem is not with the programs you are using. If I read your problem correctly, the problem lies wherein you cannot choose a port number that is required by the program because the bluetooth manager of the X51 is limited.
Here, my setup is pretty straight forward. Now the problem is when you cannot set a com port that you need. In that case, you will be needing GPSGate, instead of the resident GPS application found in Settings. You will get whatever incoming port that is available to you, use GPSgate to make a virtual port and send that signal to that virtual port.

I am a BT noob but this is how it seems to me.
In registry key (multiline)
'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\Serial\Ports\' -> 'SupportedPorts'
add line(s) with other port number(s), for example:
COM6
COM7
COM8
COM9
