Newbee here!

Good day all,

My name is Marc.

This is my first post on this site since I just got my first PDA: an X51v.

I just could not resist the electronic invasion and finally got myself a new toy. See, it is not that I absolutely need one but I felt left in the past century without one .

I read several posts over last Thursday and think this site is a must for all Axim users.

I am sure I will succeed in coming up with few newbee questions and hope you guys/gals will be patient with me. :)

Here's what I got:
1)
Axim X51v
2)
Dell protection screen pack (I read they are not the best but hey they were already shipped from Dell when I read this)
3)
Secondary 2200mAH battery: ( The Dell sales person told me the long life battery was the same thickness than the standard one which is not exactly right at all. It is twice as thick and comes with a new battery cover. It is not too bad but I hate being told false information. So for those of you who are told it is the same thickness and where thickness matters, now you know.
4)
Belkin 3-1 travel kit: I essentially took it for the 12V car adaptor for my "future" GPS utilization (I like toys...hehehe).
Few piece of info:
My hardware version is A00
My ROM version is A01.

After reading the issues with the "Axim power on issues", I was a bit disapointed to receive an "older" hardware and ROM version but hey we'll see.

I bought the device using my EPP (Employee Purchase Plan) which gave me an additional 5% off the good $99CDN rebate from last week.

Enough of introduction.
I do have few questions.

Q1:
The device is now on the charger like the instruction manual says (minimum 8 hours). However, the power light has turned green after an hour of charging and the manual says the 1100mAh bat take 5 hours to fully charge. Are the 8 hours mandatory?
Q2:
Next, I will have to install the Active sync software. At work I have a laptopDell Latitude 600 running XP and have at Home a desktop Dimension 8100 running W2K SP4. Is there any issue to install a copy of the Active sync on each computer? My primary use for the PDA is personnal work use. At work we are running Groupewise as main E-mail and I am using Outlook express at home. I am planning to use Outlook at home soon and dump Express.
Q3:
Which program from the Dell Getting Started CD do you guys recommends as a must?

I guess I'll keep it short for now.

Thanks again for all of you who will reply.

I am thrill about this new device and hope I will soon be in a position to help others too.

Cheers

Marc G

A1: wait for 8 hours, although I haven't and many users disagree with that , but still, what do you have to lose
A2: No problem , technically but search the forum for info about AS 4.1
A3: Don't remember what's on Dell's cd but search the forums for " must have apps" "favorite apps" etc.
usually it's SPB, SBSH, Resco, software, Astraware games.

Yeah, well I knew nothing about axims when I got mine, and only charged it for about 7 hours. I think this is enough but, yeah I would definitely recommend the full 8 hours. Then, you can install activesync on as many computers as you want, download it from the Microsoft website, it is free. I found the Dell CD not all that great, and immediately downloaded and bought all sorts of software. I got mine for the same reason you did, so that I could have the newest latest thing, and now, I really do use it for organizing my contacts, and keeping track of important appointments. I also occasionally find myself playing games :P
But, yeah you will have a great time, and welcome to Aximsite!!!

Welcome Mark. You can install active sync to many computers, but without special software you can only sync 2 at a time.

Check out everyone's my pda for cool software. Make sure the software is compatible w/your new operating system.

Welcome to the Axiumsite! Soon you will be an Aximsite old timer like me. (Ha!)

From the what I heard department: There is supposed to be a circuit that limits the battery charge to prevent over charging. Green’s got to be charged???

Lots of opinions on screen protectors. I used a slightly undersized protector from an old PDA with a flat surface that sucked. Using ScreenGuardz, clear, works great, and can be re-positioned.

What little time I have I search this site to try to to figure which utilities I need which ones I don’t but would like to have. :headscrat Sprite backup :approve: is in my need list.

I found the best way to charge for 8 hours was to plug it in during the evening and work with it in the morning. And I'm not impressed with the Dell screen covers.
