First an intro since I'm new and this is my 1st post here:
Have owned a few PocketPC's in the past (Casio Em-500, iPaq 1910, Asus a620) and most recently was a Zodiac user (I'm also one of the founders of ZodiacGamer.com, a once very popular Zodiac news site). Zodiac was great but mine died a slow hardware death. But I came to like PalmOS for its relative stability.
Long story short - I need/want a new PDA. Saw the Palm TX in the store and was apalled by the dim screen and lack of features. I'm not paying $300 for something less impressive than my 2 or 3 year old Zodiac. I like PamOS, but PalmOne (AKA Palm again) makes weak overpriced crap IMO. I just can't bring myself to buy their devices.
So I decided to return to PocketPC, and I ordered an X51v yesterday, but I did lurk here a while to aquaint myself with the device first. Seems you get a lot for your money (in my case $350 after coupons) but I'm also seeing so many horror stories here about instability. I know not to expect much from Microsoft, but my Casio and iPaq were pretty stable actually (the Asus was a pain which is why I sold it and went back to the Zodiac).
I hope I made the right choice with the Axim. I wonder if HP's recent models are more stable though. But their prices are quite higher and I really wanted to stay close to the $300 mark.
My main uses will be ebook reading, basic PIM, taking notes (text and voice), music playback and some minor wifi internet surfing. I used to be heavily into games, but not so much now. But I probably will play some.
Sorry for rambling...
So I'm looking for X51v SUCCESS stories.
Anyone have an x51v for at least a few weeks and getting good, stable use from it? I'd love to hear your POSITIVE experiences, and also what software do you use the most.
Simply the best PDA on the market as far as Power is concern. I love games and honestly games on this machine (thanks to ATI) will soon be as good looking as on a PSP. Besides a few WM2005 problems and the poor battery life I absolutelu love my X51V. Try Morphgear and you'll be amazed by the SNES emulation. Try Toy Golf....you'll understand.
I just recieved my x51v 2 days ago. I am so happy and have no regrets whatsoever. The only thing I was worried about was getting True VGA working, and I was successful, using certificates i downloaded for ozVGA files. Overall, it has been almost perfect, and mostly, the only times it would crash ( by crash I mean require a soft reset ) is when it was my fault.
I think and hope that you will feel the same way. It's got good battery life, good Wi-Fi, and the only area in which it is lacking is bluetooth, but I am hoping that in future updates to the OS, that will be fixed.
Note: If I were you, I would do the ROM update for windows mobile 5.0 before you start playing with the device, because its a pain to get all of the software and info back on afterwards
Well, I bought mine on the day it was announced because I have ordered a X50V and then cancelled the order to get a X51V. So I have it for quite a long time now.
I use it basically for PIM and browsing (through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) and started gaming on it since I discovered that ScummVM works on it since day one.
I came from an iPaq 4150 that was pretty stable.
I don't have any complains about it. It's fast enough for my taste, it's stable enough for my needs and true VGA mode looks nice because I love hi-res small-fontre screens (I have a 17" monitor with 1600x1200 resolution, for you to get an idea).
That's my opinion, I hope you have a great time with your X51V.

I bought a used x51v to replace my old HP, used primarily for PIM and occasional web browsing until the cramped screen annoyed me too much. I also bought a new x51v a few days later when Dell had a special going and they could be had for $244! Both have proven very stable, with barely more than a couple of minor glitches from time to time, such as the 'switcher' loosing track of which applications were open. I've done a soft reset on both perhaps once a week but had none of the issues that seem to have been regularly reported here, such as with active sync or wifi drop out. Not only that, but with the VGA screen the thing is far more flexible and versatile, and as a result it now gets far more use than the old HP did.
Like you Prophet I came from a Zodiac and I was unable to find any devices that matched or exceeded my Zodiac. I settled on the Axim and I have to say in terms of screen size, wifi, and battery life it is better then my Zodiac!
I see you had the same transition I had. Went from gaming to productivity! I think my Axim has helped me succeed in that aspect.
Also it has been completely stable. I have to reset from a garbled screen when I play Sim City 2000, but that's another problem

hmm there's another time the screen corruption has been mentioned on this site, as for myself ,i haven't seen it in at least 45 days, maybe its because im using a netfront trial.i still want Hell (aka Dell) to resolve this in the next rom update. we are coming up on a new year and i do not want to be seein that crap.

It happens every time when I play Sim City 2000. It's a little annoying to reset every time but I love that game so I deal with it. It's really easy to get it as it happens every time I do it:
1. Pick a disaster that makes fire (air crash).
2. Dispatch the fire department
3. Watch the screen get garbled.
Most of the troubles that I had at the begining with the X51v came mostly from being a noob and being affraid to reinstall when an app didn't seem to work properly or had impacted other programs....
When I finally started using the X51v regularly and performed very basic maintenance , my Ax has been absolutely awessome!
Do the A12 upgrade (if not received with it) consider the widcomm stack (if planning on using multiple bluetooth accessories) and use this site when in doubt... heck, visit us even when not in doubt... we have lots of fun!

I was looking for a GPS system, once used a Palm, thought that it'd be more useful with a pocketpc+BT GPS than a standalone GPS that would sit in the car
the only thing i wished my X51v could have would be a camera.
X51v worked greatly, after i dealed with the Activesync issues(resolved with the FAQs in this forum) and other stufff that're minor
Prior Handspring owner and have had the X51v for about a month. Have done one soft reset due to my own screwup. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed the unit.
Biggest success was being able to control my ham radio station at home using a remote wifi connection. People do look at you funny when you start talking to your PPC!
i am also a former palm user. win mobile 5 does take some getting used to, and programs do tend to be more "taps away" than on a palm but once you get used to it, its quite easy to use. dont get me wrong, if there was a device with the same specs as the axim but that ran palm OS i would probabally be first in the que to buy it. but there isnt! and really, in the end, its the device that matters far, far more than the OS.
as for gaming, it really is the best gaming PDA out there.... and the PS1 emulator project is looking great, we just need more games for the axim, really, ones that show off its true potential

I've had my x51v (A12 ROM) for a few months and have done / found the following:-
Replaced the MS bluetooth stack with the Broadcom bluetooth stack as posted on this site.
The above has expanded the bluetooth options significantly.
Fix the Com Port registry entry, as posted on this site.
---------
Stability is good under most conditions, but be selective about any 3rd party app's you choose to install because most problems seem to be caused by 3rd party applications. (specifically "Today" screen utilities that have meters etc.)
I've used SK Tools to clean up the registry and remove dead keys etc.
I use my x51v for GPS navigation together ith a Holux GPSlim236, performance and stability is 100%.
I also use TCPMP as my media player (MP3, mpeg etc. etc) which is also a first class application.
I also run both app's simultaneously with 100% stability.
If there is any advice I can offer it would be:-
1) Be prepared to experiment with different app's until you find something that works best for your requirements.
2) Be prepared to do a few hard resets while doing the above. (1)
3) Try demo software before you part with your cash. (just because you pay for software does not mean it's bug / problem free.) Some of the best software is free.
4) Bookmark this web site because the spectrum of information is vast.
