Dissappearing CF card in WM5? No problem, I think I found the solution/work around...
So, I just bought a 512 MB Kingston standard CF card yesterday and I encountered the dissappearing CF card problem. I noticed the CF always dissappears after turning the unit off if it's left in the PPC during a soft reset. I also have a 1 GB Lexar 32x SD card, which never dissappeared on me before.
My work around didn't work, but this worked:

I can attest to the fact this method works! I have not lost my CF card since I applied it.
If you have other problems, like unit not turning on, excessive battery drain while unit is off, etc.. in addition to dissappearing CF card, it was suggested by someone else to leave the BT on at all times. Since I do not have any other problems other than the dissapppeaing CF card, I did not bother trying this method.
Another person on this site suggested leaving the BT on all of the time, even when shutting off your unit. I have been testing this for over 60 hours now and the CF and SD cards I have installed have never been lost. I also have not experienced a 'does not turn on' issue during that time also. The loss to the battery next to nothing. For me its working great.
Here's a post-A04 "fix" that seems to be working for me with the flash cards because I starting loosing BOTH AFTER the ROM upgrade! What I did was remove both cards and hard reset the Ax. I then reformatted the cards in my card reader and gave them volume names to match those that WM5 assigns - i.e., "SD Card" and "CF Card". Now at 21 continuous hours of keeping them where after A04 they'd disappear in what seemed to be minutes! BTW - no BT or wireless on! Here's hoping!
Damn, NVM, my workaround doesn't work. I still get dissappearing CF card.
Any other bright ideas?
Yes turn your BT (Blue Tooth) on and leave it on while your units on and off. I have done that for over 60 hours now and have not lost my CF or my SD cards.
I have been trying the bluetooth fix for about 8 hours now, and so far no problems with the CF card disappearing. Not only that but I have also noticed a substancial increase in battery life with the bluetooth on. Makes me wonder what the battery life would be like with this problem actually fixed in the ROM.
This has got to be the most ridicoulous temporary fix I have ever heard of. And I am not particularly looking forward to the next update if they manage to screw up the backups again. Still reloading software.
Turning it on every now and then to see if I had lost my card yet, the battery only went down about 4% in the first six hours. Remember that the Bluetooth will only be running when you actually power on the device. And by the way, all of this makes no sense to me either, but I am so sick of losing my CF card and having to reset periodically to power on that I was willing to try anything.
Try what I indicated. Now ~30 hours without issue.
Hey, I think this works also! I tried what you suggested last night at 6 pm. It's 10 am now. I left my X51v turned off (not full power off) during the night and my cf card is still visible. That's 16 hrs so far! crossing my fingers!

:approve: I've got ~44 hours on the clock now and my Ax is doing well! :)
I think we should point the people who claim all the problems on the x51v are caused by software incompatabilities to this thread. The bluetooth on has fixed all my problems, the power on issue, the CF Card disappearing and high battery use when off. I can't figure out how having the bluetooth on could fix software problems, can you?

OK, so I have encountered a similarly annoying problem. If my unit powers down by timer with the WiFi on, I can't get it to turn back on. I'm at A04. Steps to reproduce:
Get your unit to A04 (or A01, i had problem then too)
Set your power-off timer to 1 minute
Enable your wireless using the Dell WLAN utility
Place the x51v on the table, and let it sit for ~3 minutes
Press the power button - NOTHING
Press it again - NOTHING
Place it in the cradle - WHITE SCREEN
I tried this with and without the BT on - same results
I tried this associated and just listening - same results
very, very, very annoying
I have to disable my power-off timer whenever I'm using WiFi, or keep myself busy on the axim. Aggrivating
