How Avantgo Settings can affect X50v/WM5 Performance
As you know there is no way to tell ActiveSync how often to sync. After I installed the latest Avantgo client, I notice ActiveSync tries to sync very frequently (every few minutes) and the Axim responses painfully slowly while synch'ing. Look at ActiveSync window, Avantgo is always the longest item to sync...
So I went out to www.Avantgo.com and find out, that I have to setup the sync interval rigth at their Web site. Just log in to your account, select manage channels and you can click on each to change the interval (per channel). So it is recommended to scatter the interval so all the channels will not be sync'ed at the same time. The default is "sync at the same time and very frequently". This really helped ActiveSync to behave correctly. No performance whie on cradle.
BTW, since Avantgo now supports WM5 (still in Beta) and RSS. I decided to subcribe ($20/year) so I can download whole bunch of RSS news at high picture resolution,...It's great. Don't forget to unzip and drop the attached mui file in Avantgo directory to make Avantgo "VGA aware"!

I don't like Avantgo because I have to scroll left and right to read. I actually prefer Mobipocket newsstand stuff. Also it seems my x51v slows down with Avantgo.

Can you point me to more info on Mobipocket newsstand ? Is it a s/w or browser ? And do they have syncing capability ?
Avantgo is the biggest pain in the neck piece of software there is. Its a memory hog, bogs down synching to a snail's crawl, and most of what they have is available for free over the net anyway. Just my $.02, but I've tried it about three times now and each time I killed it.
I also feel it takes a long time, I wish it had a desktop component that queues up data from the internet, so that when it sync's it's faster.
I have two PDA's, having the data queued would also solve the issue of both devices needing fresh info from the net.
Compared to RSS, there's a lot of bandwidth for advertizements instead of in-article pictures. If you have a choice of getting the same feed through Avango or a newsreader, go with the newsreader.
I find it useful to get information through both RSS and Avantgo. However, since Avantgo is so slow I only sync one or two times per day, whereas my newsreader every hour. Which makes sense, many of the Avango subscriptions I have are daily editions.
And I save my Avango cache to memory card, not main memory. This can be done by installing Avantgo Client on the card, or if you are using PIE- Tweaks2K2 can change your cache location.

Prior to my X50v suffering a complete and debilitating crash (hangs on soft reset, and won't hard reset), I was running AG with the Tweaks2k2 ForceVGA tweak, which looked real nice--even better than 2003SE. I'm assuming AG didn't result in the crash, of course...

That's odd - I've used Avantgo on a few PDAs up to my current X50v and I've never had to scroll left and right!
Is this a bug in WM5?
I found Avantgo to be very slow if installed to "Built in Storage" but fine on an Sd Card. I understand that Built in Storage is not good for Reading\ Writing a lot of small files (which is what Avantgo does). The X51v with WM5 defaults to Built in Storage doesn't it? Perhaps you could try installing it to a memory card?
It's worth persevering as it's great when you get it working.
If you are using AG with IE (not the client program) you do not want your IE explorer cache on the same "drive" as your AG cache, esp. if it is BIS. I tried it and it would take about 10 seconds or more for a page to build.
I get the "off window" thing with my Ax running WM2003, it's just a few characters. When you scroll right the letters can get garbled. Very annoying.
