your pda is not even as fast as the slowest cards but loading files with a reader will be quicker with a faster writing card

Backing up is a lot faster as well. My backup in my x51v takes only 5 mins. Others are complaining it takes 30 min. I have a 32x 1GB Lexar SD card.

I don't have a fast SD, I only have a "slow" Sandisk 256MB SD.
Compare that Sandisk 256MB SD to a Kingston Elite Pro 2GB CF, it's like day and night in my X51v.

what make the difference in the axim is the access time

If you take the cheapest Sandisk memory card, and let say you have 10 games installed. When you go in the Game folder in your Start menu, it could take between 10 seconds to 40 seconds to show the icons ! Now, with a good memory (32x-40x is perfect) the same task will take 2 to 5 seconds. And this is only displaying shurtcut icons.

If you install Minimo or Netfront, browsing the web sill be faster too. But if you only store MP3 or video, then there will be not much difference..

So yes, there is a difference in speed and people that say no, probably never tried a good memory card (or a bad one)

As PaulSM say, it can be day and night.

Also different cards will allow the machine different read/write speeds. The x50v will certainly not reach the rated speed, but cards can definitely have an impact on IO performance.

Take a look at: http://www.core-sound.com/pdaudio_system/6.php

Yes a faster SD card made a difference in my case. Ripping DVDs to SD card and playing them - MUCH smoother with a faster card... YMMV.

For what it's worth. I have a Sandisk extreme III SD card. This is a fast card and i never ever experienced a lost SD card like some others did. Not with ROM A01 and also not with A04. I don't know if it's related or i am just coincidently lucky.

Uhm..No it's not. I strongly recommend you get at least 1 GB. You need to consider more than just apps. I use my axim as my mp3 player and movie player. Trust me, you want at least 1 GB.

Take tallshorty's advice. Get the 1GB. I bought a 256MB under the same assumption you have and regretted it. I now have a 256MB that serves no purpose. I ended up buying myself a 1GB within 3 months of the 256MB.

has anyone done tests to see the read/write speed limit to SD?

i wouldn't want to buy a 80x card if the axim's max is 40x (for example)

The speed on the axim is not too important. If you plan to transfer a lot of large files like music or movies, you should buy an external USB 2.0 card reader anyways. It takes forever to transfer an 800 MB movie with a slow card. That's really the real benefit of getting a fast card. Using the axim to transfer large files is very slow. I don't recommend it.

Also, I'd say a 40x card is more than adequate. I have a 32x SD card. It takes less than 2 min to transfer a 350 MB video file using a USB 2.0 card reader, which is fast enough for me.

oh i know that.. but i think the axim's performance is limited but it's BIS

i have a high bitrate file that the axim stumbles to play, and i believe it's due my slow CF card (it's a 6000kbps xvid with 192kbps mp3)
