Question about exchange/OWA?

I'm just starting to understand exchange and all that.

If I understand correctly, OWA (outlook web access) is an exchange client. So theoretically, as I'm always hearing about exchange on my ppc or smartphone, I'm wondering if theres a way to sync my emails and possibly calander I normally have to get through OWA at work, on my device.

No. OWA is simply a web interface for your Exchange account. Nothing more, nothing less. Its functionality is limited as it has never really been intended as anything but a quick way to check your mail, calendar or tasks.

Alright, then what would need to be involved to directly syncronize with the exchange server? Could it be set up to be done over the net?

You would need a mail program on your Axim other than Pocket Outlook. Pocket outlook only allows pulling mail from POP and IMAP4 mail accounts wirelessly. Not quite sure of any programs on the PPC side that would allow exchange mail synching. For Palm devices one can use Versamail which has the ability to set up an "Exchange Activesync" account to sync mail wirelessly.

I use a program from Extended Systems and it works great. It also allows an administrator to send applications to your device and set certain restrictions on what can and can not be on your PC. It is excellent for managing and syncing PPC's. Here is the link:

Look into Exchange Server SP2. Of course, WM5 will be a must.

Depending on whych version of Exchange your company is using. Exchange 5.5 (and 2000, I think) OWA used pop-ups to displace emails and Forward/Reply. PIE doesn't support pop-ups, so you couldn't view any emails, though you could log on and see the contents of your mailbox.

With Exchange 2003 and SP2, you get a few more options:

1. OMA (rather than OWA) supports mobile devices via a web interface that's a bit more managable.

2. SP2 adds push technology to WM5 handhelds, if you have a wireless ISP that's supported.

On the flip-side, there are some PIE replacements that don't have the pop-up limitation of PIE, so using 5.5 OWA may be possible.

Makes sense? If not, forgive me, as I'm just learning Exchange 2003 while planning our migration, and have yet to try all the new mobile features...yet.

Actually,

I know it works with Exchange prior to SP2. There is an add on on the Exchange CD which enables OMA (Outlook Mobile Access). Essentially, it creates another virtual directory (OMA), through which ActiveSync can access and synch with Exchange 2003.

Try this site: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/...rver_2003.html . It has a short tutorial on setting up OMA.

Once you have gotten that far, you just need to configure ActiveSync (on the PPC) to talk directly to Exchange 2003. This also is fairly easy. Open ActiveSync, and in WM2003SE I think it is under options, but on WM5, you will find a configure server entry on the ActiveSync menu.

When you type in the server, just use the fully qualified domain name of your exchange server. It works much better if you can use the same name inside and outside of your firewall. You do not need to add the "http://", or the "/OMA/". Just the host name. After that, enter your credentials, and maybe a schedule if you want one.

Your PDA will now synch with Exchange over the net.

HTH

Or if you are only interested in getting email (Not calander, contacts, etc...) you can simply enable POP access on your Exchange server and connect wirelessly via POP.
