Wait for USB to be ready... ROM fails to update

Hi guys,

I've been going through these threads and I've noticed alot of people are having problems with their ROMS, I'm no different. I have been trying to update my ROM from A03 to A05 or A01(WM5) with no success. I'm running Windows Server 03. The trouble is when I open the ROM file and start the transfer, it stays locked at 0% and my x50 says "Wait for USB to be ready..." and then ActiveSync disconnects, and exits. I think I tried using ActiveSync 3.8, 4.0 and 4.1, none of them seem to work. My Axim locks up and I have to reboot it. After awhile the ROM update software complains that it can't connect. I know some people have the same problem but I have yet to find the solution, can someone please help me with this?

Thanks in advance,

-Phil

I'm just curious, but could you search in your Windows System32 directory for rapi.dll. Right click on properties to see what version it is. Is that the same version as your ActiveSync now?

Did AS work before?

The rapi.dll file states it's version 4.1.0, and that's what I have installed (ActiveSync's 'About' page also says 4.1.0). AS worked before but I never used this OS or this version of AS. I used it to go from A01->A03.

I just rebooted into XP and tried A03->A05 using AS 3.8 (All of which I used to originally update my Axim) And the same results came up, my Axim froze in "Waiting for USB..." and ActiveSync crashed.

After trying for the last week or so to get the ROM onto my Axim I still haven't had any success. Same problem, despite rebooting, changing operating systems and changing Active Sync versions AND trying to install different ROMs. The problem seems to be between my computer and the AximX50, so I'm wondering if there's a way to install the ROM from an SD card or CF card, as I've seen done on the X30s.

Thanks in advance,

-Phil

Problem found! I gave myself limited permissions my PC and apparently that was what was causing my problem. Updates are installing and soon I'll be posting threads asking "How do I rollback to WM2003? I HATE WM5". Until then, have a nice day and thanks for dropping by.

Permissions

It seems that the update utility needs alot of permissions and will fail if you don't do it as an administrator, or at least an administrative account. Try going into your control panel, under users, and changing your acount from limited to administator.
It worked for me.

A01(WM5) to A02(WM5)

I'm trying to update from A01(WM5) to A02(WM5), but progress doesn't go beyond 0% before this pops up:

Code:
Caution

The procedure CANNOT proceed due to the following reason:

*USB driver problem found! Please reset your device and run this utility again.

OK
My XP SP3 account is an Administrator one. My device is an Axim x50 and the A02 update file is R143811 from Dell's site. And I'm running ActiveSync 4.5.0.

Edit: Fixed by uninstalling AS 4.5 and installing AS 4.0 from Dell CD. WinXP also asked for wceusbsh.sys, which was on the Dell CD. Then the USB driver problems were over and ROM update proceeded. After upgrade to A02, the device asked that AS 4.1 or later be used.
