Buying the X51v or wait for a newer version ?

Need advice on buying a PDA.

The X51v seems to be the most appealing PDA on the market. However it's been out for some time, and I was thinking: will there be any new version of the Axim handhelds any time soon ? I.e. should I wait for an axim X60 or go ahead and buy the X51v ?

They put out new pdas every 6 months or so. If you need one get it. They'll fix any problems with it soon enough.

I disagree and would recommend waiting, at least for a stable ROM update of WM5 and until your most important apps are made compatible with WM5. If you don't need to be productive now with it, go ahead and go for it, but I personally don't care to be an unwitting beta tester.

That's exactly what I'm doing.

I'm dying to dump my Palm Tungsten C, but am not doing it until more of the x51v issues are sorted. I use my PDA for work and can't afford to be screwing around with all of the problems the x51v seems to be having right now. :(

Next WM5 Update?

Does anyone have any ideas or rumors when then next WM5 ROM update will occur? I have an Axim X5 and want to move to the X51 when it is stable. I'll also be looking for a GPS device and mapping software, so I want to make sure they will all work together.

I have the X51v I would recomend it to anyone, there will always be new models coming out , how long do you wait. The fact that don't have a new model yet says alot for that particular model. If this model was no good,Dell would quickly cover it up with another model.

Yeah waiting makes perfect since. Microsoft is known for perfecting product and solving problems. The next release will be perfection and worth waiting for. I hear they are going to optimise the code and the axims will be twice as fast and all the security issues will be solved. Dell is going to finally implement that super conductive bubble memory and offer 500Gig with a battery life of 12 years. I bet it will bluetooth to 256 devices at once and your brain will be one of them.

Besides if I invest my $300 in six months I ought to be able to retire. Yeah buddy waiting is a great Idea. Why didn't I think of it.

Good Point, Even if I'm not buying a new axim anytime soon, I just bought an X5 Advanced and love it. Very stable, only have had to soft reset once in my month of having it. I love it, so maybe you should buy an X5 or different "stable" model. I'm not saying don't go with the X51 series, but if your looking for something stable I'd try an X50, X50v (Running WM2003SE), or even something older like an X5 (I love mine)

HAving just purchased an x51v recently (<3 months ago) I have to say that I don't understand those who say "wait for an updated ROM".

I have A06, loaded it as an update from Dell website, and have had few issues at all, much less anything that would have kept me from buying it. Based upon the naysayers, I might have believed differently if I was in the market, but having bought one somewhat uninformed, I can now say that there isn't anything that would have kept me from buying it!

If you need one, get it, and don't buy it thinking that you're going to experience problem after problem with it. Yeah there are some that have problems, but every platform is going to have a smallpercentage of issues that infuriate a small percentage of buyers.

My question to them might be 'how far are you pushing the boundaries in terms of fringe software that isn't written well enough to operate on it?'.

I have downloaded probably 50 - 60 different freeware programs (too cheap to buy the really good stuff) and have not experienced more than a couple of programs that have caused serious malfunctions, and those I wonder if I was downloading a wrong version or they were just not that good a program anyways.

DO IT!!! The thing rocks, as an mp3 player, a movie player, plus all the normal "outlook" type stuff.

I have one question. You ask him to wait but you're using a x51v yourself? m... how come?

Anyway, waiting is good but the waiting game could go on and on and on forever. Just get one when you really really want it. By the time the next one with the stable ROM, we'll be using it on our X51v too.

Ya gotta love those "justify the past purchase by telling others to join them" folk. There's also a small but vocal WM5 haters Club at work here. With the exceptions of some missing bluetooth profiles and the almost inhuman effort involved in applying the dreaded fake server fix (takes about 30 seconds), the X51 is pretty darned stable. Far more stable than the X5 was when it was first released. WM5 is still a new OS and there are going to be a few issues, but I see no reason to wait for the few remaining fix's. There is no perfect OS and I doubt there will ever be! As someone who went through the then new WinCE3.0, WM2003 and WM2003SE teething problems, WM5's problems aint bad at all! If you have the urge and the dough now, jump in and If you're still straddling the fence, maybe a PocketPC isn't right for you at all. For those "don't buy a X51, get a refurb/used X50/X30/X3/X5 instead"crowd, might I also suggest forgoing that Xbox 360 for a spanking used Playstation1 or how about passing up a new Vista box for a superior ME box!

Well you see I am willing to live with imperfection. Its a personality defect. I play with my Axim about 4 hours a day, games, music, work, schedule, internet. And I have the almost super human ability to overlook the maybe 10 minutes of downtime in the last four months. Some people have principles and can't be bothered with flaws, I understand that. So I can not open that 6 meg Word document on my 51, Thats okay I can live with that. I can tell this guy has a higher standard. Someday maybe he can buy an axim knowning its perfect, along with a color tv, they should be perfected by then also.
